3 Ways to Show Your Business Some Love on Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day: a day widely recognized as a day to show LOVE.

Although we can all agree that love should be given 365 days per year, there is absolutely nothing wrong with devoting a day to celebrate love in all it’s glory!

Being the business woman that I am, I felt that a day like today would be perfect to, not only show your devotion and affection towards a special person in your life, but to also give that same attention and outpouring of love to your business, which is just as worthy of a little extra TLC.

Here a 3 ways to show your business a little extra love on Valentine’s Day:

Give Your Business a “Sexy” Makeover:

Visual branding is important. The way you present your business…your website, social media, marketing materials, etc., will play a key role in shaping a potential client’s perception of your brand, and whether or not they will choose to work with you. Take a look at your current branding and determine if it accurately reflects the look, feel, and message that you want your business to convey. If not, it’s time to give it a visually appealing, aka “sexy” upgrade.

Romance Your Hustle:

Often times, when you have romantic interest in someone, you pull out all the stops to show your love. You choose to date and spend quality time when you truly want to get to know someone and are looking toward a future with them. The same goes for your business. You have to put in the time and the work. Romance your business by taking it on regular “dates” to plan for your success. Get out of your regular work space and find a nice ambiance to really dig deep and learn everything about your business. What’s currently working? What’s not working? Where do you need to pivot and shift? How much money do you have coming in? How much is going out? Just like when you’re dating someone new, you can’t be afraid to ask the necessary questions. You can also use these business dates to determine your social media and marketing strategies, create quality content, and develop a solid profit plan for your business.

Don’t be a Cheap Date

Trust me,  no one likes a cheap date! Just the same, your business will not thrive if you are a cheap business owner. Loosen up your pockets and invest in your business! It cannot, and will not, thrive in the “free zone”…you know, downloading all of the freebies, attending only free webinars and classes, and not putting in a penny towards your business’ growth. It’s just not possible. If you want to win in business, you’ll have to get comfortable spending the money necessary to take it to the next level.

Remember, your business needs love too!

How will you show yours a little extra love today?

Escape Your 9-5: How to Create an Exit Strategy

I have to give a disclaimer that this post is NOT intended to encourage you to quit your job and dive right into the world of entrepreneurship.  Before you do that, you must have a solid plan in place, and each individual’s situation will be different because there are different factors to be considered.

Mogul in the Making - How to Create an Exit Strategy

How many times have you said to yourself “This is it…this is the year I finally quit my job and work for myself full time?”.  If you are currently working a 9-5 and building your business on the side, you know that it can be extremely difficult to juggle both (trust me, I’ve been there).

If you are serious about making the leap and pursuing your entrepreneurial goals, there are some things that you will need to do to prepare yourself for the big change.  The most important of those things is to create an exit strategy, or plan to help you smoothly transition from employee to BOSS!

Below, I outline 6 things to do when creating your exit strategy:

Set a date

Setting a date gives you something concrete to work towards.  It’s not enough to just say, “I’m going to it my job in a few months…or next year”.  Put a date on it so that you will remain focused and working toward that very specific goal. SMART – Specific. Measurable. Attainable.

Create a Nest Egg

You will want to make sure you save up enough money for you to survive on while you are building your business. As a rule of thumb, you should have a least 6 months of expenses saved while you are growing your business, just in case you do not get that influx of clients right away.  Also, factor in your marketing and monthly business expenses.

  • How much money do you need each month to cover your personal expenses?
  • How much money do you estimate you will need each month to cover the operational expenses of your business?
  • How much money will you need for one-time start-up expenses, such as incorporation fees, or new equipment?

Dream Job

Get the ball rolling

Start working on gaining clients and building a solid business foundation NOW. When your exit date rolls around, maybe you will be confident enough to actually follow through with it if you are already seeing results in your business.

Start Down-Sizing

Train yourself to live on the bare minimum while you are in transition.  As mentioned before, you will need to sacrifice now so that you will be able to live the type of lifestyle you desire in the future.  If you begin to down-size while you are working in bringing in an income, it will not be such a shock to your system when you are forced to do it down the line.

Start paying down debt

The last thing you need is a cloud of debt hanging over your head while you are building your business.  This will undoubtedly create stress and pressure, which may cause you to lose focus of your goals.  Mounting bills will make you want to abandon your business for the stability of a consistent and guaranteed paycheck.

Focus on the bigger picture

What is your ultimate goal? Make sure you consider the long-term effects of the decision that you are about to make.  Do you see your business as something that you can do for years to come, or is this something you’re thinking of doing as a quick money maker? How long will you give yourself to make the business work before you consider returning to work? Are you going to jump ship when things get rough?  How will this decision affect your family?  There are a lot of things to consider before taking the big leap.  Make sure you weigh all of your options carefully, think things through, and are confident that you are making the right decision for YOU.

Remember, businesses are not built in a day.  They are built step-by-step. You have everything inside of you that you need to be successful.  Step up to the plate, stop playing small, decide what you want, create your plan, put your plan into action, and follow through with persistence.

Do you have an exit strategy in place? How much time, or what date have you set, for you to pursue your business full time? Leave a comment below.

MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Anetra Henry-Hunting

It’s that time again: Mogul in the Making’s Entrepreneur Spotlight, where every Monday we feature an entrepreneur to watch.  I hope you have been enjoying the series, and taking away the golden nuggets shared in the interviews!

Today, we are featuring Anetra Henry-Hunting, founder of The Hunting Group, a boutique-consulting firm that provides management, marketing, and customer retention plans to small and medium-sized businesses.

Anetra was affectionately introduced to me as “the connector…because she knows EVERYBODY!” She connects people to resources, and is the go-to gal if you are: 1. looking to obtain sponsors for an upcoming event, or 2. interested in becoming a sponsor to attract clients to your business.

Read on to find out how a lay off from her corporate job led to entrepreneurial success:

Anetra Henry-Hunting

Name: Anetra Henry-Hunting

Location: San Diego, CA

Business Name: The Hunting Group

Years in Business: 4

Are you a full or part time business owner?

Full Time

The Hunting Group

Why did you start your business?

After being laid off in March, 2009, I went on several interviews and kept being told various versions of no—you’re over-qualified, we’re going with an internal candidate, etc. I decided to tell myself YES and started The Hunting Group with my husband, Nicholas. Like many entrepreneurs, I had several different skill sets and first attempted to be all things to all clients. After a severe injury in 2011, I was forced to focus on finding my real purpose in business, and that was to help people understand sponsorship so they could get the sponsorship they deserve or find their ideal clients with ease.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

Being able to live out the ethics I hold dear in business.

What are your biggest challenges?

Sponsorship is not one of those topics that most people are truly educated about, so the biggest challenge we’ve had to overcome are people’s misconceptions about how it works, (having to pay for our time), and their misguided expectations (over-valuing their product).

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

Invest your time where you get the biggest bang for your buck. –Tyra Howard (my mentor)

Anetra Henry-Hunting
Anetra Henry-Hunting speaking at The List Tour San Diego, educating attendees on Sponsorship.

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

Carla Stewart is my partner and Dawn Jessie is our admin.

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

There are many interesting changes happening in the field of sponsorship and we plan to be on the cutting edge of them. We want to increase our educational efforts as well as turn more small business owners and entrepreneurs into SPONSORS instead of having the mentality they need to be in a constant state of seeking sponsorship.

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

Pick ONE thing and do that thing well in business.

MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Marisa Quinn

Happy Monday! It’s time for another round of Mogul in the Making’s Entrepreneur Spotlight!

Today, we are spotlighting Marisa Quinn of Marisa Q Photography.  Not only does she run a thriving photography business, Marisa is also a professional model and actress!  She is very passionate about capturing the true essence of her clients, revealing who they really are to their core.

Check out Marisa’s interview, where she breaks down how to juggle multiple careers, shares tips on how to manage overwhelm, and explains why just taking the first step is so important when it comes to starting a business.

Marisa Quinn Photography

Name: Marisa Quinn

Location: Santa Monica

Business Name: Marisa Q Photography

Years in Business: 5

Are you a full or part time business owner?

Full time multi-faceted entrepreneur. I am a photographer, as well as a working actress and model. Each of my passions informs the other – it’s the perfect marriage of careers!

Why did you start your business?

Marisa Q Photography was born from pure passion for images that capture the beauty of humanity. I took a class about 6 years ago just for fun, and within 6 months my instructor said I had such a natural gift and keen eye for portraits, that I could start a business! It was all the encouragement I needed. A few weeks after that, I had a website up and running, and was booking my first clients. The funny thing is, my experience in modeling has been such a huge help being on the other side of the camera, because I can help my clients find their best angles, and I understand what it’s like being in front of the camera. My experience as an actor has helped a lot as well – because the entertainment industry is so focused on branding, I can help not only actors – but individuals and small businesses establish and manage their own personal brands.

Marisa Quinn Photography

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

The most gratifying aspect of running Marisa Q Photography is the gift of being able to help someone further their own career and follow their biggest dreams. I specialize in Headshots for not only actors, but freelancers, corporate employees, and small businesses. If people are coming to me for a portrait – it’s because they have big plans, and they need a dynamic headshot to help them put their best face forward.

What are your biggest challenges?

Juggling careers. I have learned to schedule my day so certain parts of it are devoted to acting, and certain hours to photography. Changing hats can be exhausting – but at the end of the day, it’s a challenge I revel in.

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

The best piece of wisdom I have ever received is that “overwhelm” is a CHOICE, and a cunning form of resistance. The truth is, there is only one thing to do at one time – so stay present, and you’ll get everything done without going bananas. A great support system I have for that philosophy is organizing my “To-Do” list by URGENCY and IMPORTANCE. Take care of the urgent AND important matters first, then the urgent, then the important. Schedule things out in time (eg: at 4pm on Weds I will…), and suddenly the weight of the world is no longer on your shoulders. You know it’s all gonna get done.

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

I have a wonderful freelance team of Make Up Artists, Hair Stylists, and Wardrobe Stylists that I work with on my shoots – and agents and managers that aid in my acting endeavors. However, the day to day running of my businesses is pretty much a one woman show. That being said – delegating to additional freelancers (web designers, editors, etc) is an AMAZING and essential component of how I get everything done.

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

The demand for professional headshots is increasing by the day – I can only imagine what it will be like in 5 years! It’s definitely not just for actors and real estate agents anymore – EVERYONE needs a professional headshot to stay competitive in the job market these days. I can definitely see myself training up-and-coming photographers in the Marisa Q Photography style of portraiture and branding. Creating a team of headshot photographers specialized in dynamic image management and branding to keep up with the ever-increasing demand of the digital age.

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

If it gets your blood pumping, then follow that dream to the ends of the earth! Even if you don’t know “how” you will do it – just focus on taking the first steps. Action informs you – TRUST that. Just keep taking action, and the rest of the path will reveal itself. Oh – and of course, “May the odds be ever in your favor!”

MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Toushonta Hogan

I woke up so happy and excited this morning because it’s time for another round of the MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight! Every Monday, I will feature a new rising entrepreneur to watch.

Today’s spotlight is on Toushonta Hogan, founder of Scentsational Soaps, a company that specializes in handmade, all natural bath and body products (they’re body butters will have your skin feeling like SILK…my fave is the Passion scent!)

I first met Toushonta through a Facebook group that we were mutually a part of.  Originally, I was really impressed by her business savvy…this woman seemed to be rocking it with her biz! As I have gotten to know her more, I am equally impressed by the fact that she is such a caring and sweet person (she has reached out to me on several occasions just to offer kind words, support, and prayers), and that she is able to run a thriving business all while being a busy wife and mother.  Not exactly an easy task, but she makes it look so effortless!

Over the last year or so, I have watched her business continue to grow and evolve, and knew that she would be the perfect person to interview to share her story.

Check it out…

Toushonta Hogan - Founder of Scentsational Soaps

Name: Toushonta Hogan

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Business Name: Scentsational Soaps

Years in Business: 6 years 9 months

Are you a full or part time business owner?

I’m a full time business owner

Why did you start your business?

In 2007, I graduated from Cal State University Dominguez Hills with my Business Administration degree with an emphasis in Human Resources and immediately begin looking for a job. Unfortunately, during that time the economy was dwindling down, making it much harder to land a career of my dreams. A month later, I decided to take my children to the Strawberry Fest in Oxnard, CA. While there, I was mesmerized by the different vendors who displayed their beautiful soaps at the fest. I went home a couple of days later and began making melt and pour soap with my kids for fun and to release the inner creative side within me. Not knowing that this would be the start of a new career, I later decided to make it a business and began doing the necessary things to put that in place.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

The most rewarding aspect of having my own business has been the unlimited supply of opportunities, meeting people from all walks of life, waking up to a new day and each day is different from the day before, embracing the learning curve that comes with growing a business and lastly, and my all time favorite, is my favorite word: FREEDOM! Freedom to be able to do the things that I want to do, when I want to do them.

What are your biggest challenges?

My biggest challenge has been juggling the many roles that comes with a business. Marketing, Branding, Shipping, Labeling, Packaging, Customer Service, etc. Overseeing these things and making sure that everything is in sync. There are some days that are chaotic, however, it allows me to learn from various issues that arise.

What is the best business advise you have ever received?

The best business advice that I have ever received has been the importance of building & nurturing relationships. Relationship building is crucial in, not only business, but in life. They can take you very far if you continuously foster them.

Do you have a team or are you a one woman/ man show?

Yes, I do have a team. My team consists of my graphic designer, marketer, and accountant. They have been with me since the birth of Scentsational Soaps. I call them “Family.” They also help with product making, labeling, and shipping. However, we are looking to expand with more help in the near future.

Scentsational Soaps

Where do you see your business in the next 5 years?

In the next 5 years, I see our product in more stores while creating more jobs in the economy as we expand.

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

My advice would be “Don’t Ever Give Up.” Although, it may sound like a cliché, it really isn’t.  There will be days that you may want to give up, or throw in the towel. You will cry, you will laugh, you will scream, yes, you will have all of these emotions, but none can put a price on the product or service that you are offering to people to make a difference in their lives. Stick with it and move forward!

I hope this interview with Toushonta serves as inspiration that you can grow your hobby into a successful and thriving business!

MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Gabrielle Norton

Today, I’m kicking off a new series on the blog: Mogul in the Making Entrepreneur Spotlight.  Every Monday, I will feature a new rising entrepreneur to watch!

My first interview is with a gal after my own heart, Gabrielle Norton of Cause We Can Events.  In case some of you didn’t know, prior to starting Mogul in the Making, I was a wedding/event planner, so I was beyond excited to interview Gabrielle because we share a similar passion for planning and executing wonderful events!

Check out her story…

Gabrielle Norton - Cause We Can Events

Name: Gabrielle Norton
Location: Manhattan Beach, CA
Business Name: ‘Cause We Can Events
Years in Business: 2

Are you a full or part time business owner?

Full time

Why did you start your business?

After working for event planners as an intern I realized that we used so many resources (money, energy, cars, supplies..) to put on an event and after working 16 hours straight we would go home and just get ready for the next event. There was no reward other than what we got paid that day. I wanted to make events more earth-friendly and try to bring in the community by giving back so I decided to start my own eco-
chic event business!

Cause We Can Events Logo

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

The flexibility of my schedule. I get to actually enjoy my little beach apartment, take a stroll to the farmers market and have coffee dates with clients midday!

What are your biggest challenges?

Meeting the right client. There are a lot of event planners out there but I have a very niche market. I’m not the right event planner for everyone and they are not all the right clients for me. It’s just a matter of pairing the right client with the right event planner and in order to do that I attend a lot of networking events and love getting new clients through word-of-mouth.

Gabrielle Norton - Cause We Can Events

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

Do something for your business every day. I can’t even remember where I heard that but even if you have no business background all you need is an idea and the drive. Do something, anything, to improve or grow your business everyday and resources will come your way. People are always willing the help out because they were in your shoes before and they know how valuable a mentor can be.

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

I’m a one woman show! I do hire assistants if the event is big and I need more design or set up help, but I tend to wear many hats and it’s working for me right now.

Gabrielle Norton - Cause We Can Events untitled (4)

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

I see myself as THE Eco-Chic Event Planner in Los Angeles and slowly expanding. I’d love to have a small team by then to bring in fresh ideas.

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

There will never be a PERFECT time to quit your job and start a business so just do it! You’ll make mistakes but in the end you will be so grateful that you’re spending your years doing something you love instead of counting down the hours at your corporate job. But don’t get me wrong, it can be a tough and lonely road being an entrepreneur, but never forget why you’re doing it.

I hope you enjoyed this interview and the golden nuggets Gabrielle shared about entrepreneurship and pursuing your passion.
