How to Market a Business

3 Ways to Show Your Business Some Love on Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day: a day widely recognized as a day to show LOVE.

Although we can all agree that love should be given 365 days per year, there is absolutely nothing wrong with devoting a day to celebrate love in all it’s glory!

Being the business woman that I am, I felt that a day like today would be perfect to, not only show your devotion and affection towards a special person in your life, but to also give that same attention and outpouring of love to your business, which is just as worthy of a little extra TLC.

Here a 3 ways to show your business a little extra love on Valentine’s Day:

Give Your Business a “Sexy” Makeover:

Visual branding is important. The way you present your business…your website, social media, marketing materials, etc., will play a key role in shaping a potential client’s perception of your brand, and whether or not they will choose to work with you. Take a look at your current branding and determine if it accurately reflects the look, feel, and message that you want your business to convey. If not, it’s time to give it a visually appealing, aka “sexy” upgrade.

Romance Your Hustle:

Often times, when you have romantic interest in someone, you pull out all the stops to show your love. You choose to date and spend quality time when you truly want to get to know someone and are looking toward a future with them. The same goes for your business. You have to put in the time and the work. Romance your business by taking it on regular “dates” to plan for your success. Get out of your regular work space and find a nice ambiance to really dig deep and learn everything about your business. What’s currently working? What’s not working? Where do you need to pivot and shift? How much money do you have coming in? How much is going out? Just like when you’re dating someone new, you can’t be afraid to ask the necessary questions. You can also use these business dates to determine your social media and marketing strategies, create quality content, and develop a solid profit plan for your business.

Don’t be a Cheap Date

Trust me,  no one likes a cheap date! Just the same, your business will not thrive if you are a cheap business owner. Loosen up your pockets and invest in your business! It cannot, and will not, thrive in the “free zone”…you know, downloading all of the freebies, attending only free webinars and classes, and not putting in a penny towards your business’ growth. It’s just not possible. If you want to win in business, you’ll have to get comfortable spending the money necessary to take it to the next level.

Remember, your business needs love too!

How will you show yours a little extra love today?

4 Tips for Following Up With Prospects

4 Tips for Following Up WIth Prospects

4 Tips for Following Up WIth Prospects

Did you know that so much money is left on the table, and business missed out on, simply due to not following up?!

Let me give you a couple of scenarios…

– A potential client reaches out to you and are not ready to book at the moment. Do you reach out to them at a later date to see where they are with their decision, or wait until they call you back (which may never happen).

– You submit a proposal (to book a gig, speak at an event, facilitate a workshop, etc.) A week or more has gone by with no response. Do you wait for a call, or do you reach out to the organization/person in charge?

– You meet some really great people at a networking event that have the potential to be a customer, or possibly has the connections and/or resources you need to help take your biz to the next level. Do you contact them within two days after the event, or do all business cards end up in a pile of doom, only to be found months later with no idea who they are or where you met them?

Does any of this sound familiar?

Well, the good news is, there are a couple of simple fixes that can help you raise your follow up game, and make the process easy peasy!

1. To follow up with a potential client, create a simple spreadsheet or document that lists the name of the prospect, date you met/spoke on the phone, a brief note with important details about the consultation/discussion, and a follow up date (don’t be afraid to ask the prospect when is a good time to follow up.)

2. When attending a networking event, don’t simply collect cards. Jot down a short note on the back of those cards that you are interested in following up with, and something that will help you remember who they were (ex: lady with the red hat). Reach out via phone or email within 24-48hrs, as anything after that may cause them to forget you or your conversation. Remember, this person may have collected a ton of biz cards too.

3. Invest in a CRM software. This will allow you to schedule follow up calls or email, keep track of your appointments, and set reminders.

4. Be persistent, but not overbearing. It’s totally ok to reach out to your prospects via different channels. For example, if a phone call goes unanswered, send an email as a back up. Don’t write it off as the person not being interested and avoiding your call.

If you are wondering why you don’t have the amount of clients that you would like, start by taking a deep look at your follow up skills, and decide how you are going to improve upon them.

4 Tips to Stop Chasing Clients, and Start ATTRACTING Them

Stop Chasing Start Attracting

As a marketing strategist and business coach, the number one question that I hear from business owners is: “how do I get more clients?”  My response: you must create an effective marketing strategy that will allow you to stop CHASING clients, and start ATTRACTING them.

There are a lot of components to this, but to quickly break it down, these four steps will allow you to do just that:

Know Your Target Audience

A common mistake that entrepreneurs make is thinking that EVERYONE is their client. While it may be true that anyone can use your product or service, when it comes to marketing your business, you have to get really specific about the type of clients you want to work with. What do they look like? How much money do they make? Where do they live? How do they speak, act, and dress? Take some time to create your ideal client profile. Knowing this information will  help you weed out those who would not be the right fit for your business, and attract those that you can better serve.

Create a Clear Marketing Message

When putting together your marketing message, act as if you are talking to one specific person: your ideal client. Focus on their pain points and the specific results that they will receive as a direct result of working with you (ex: saving money, less stress, etc.)

Be Strategic About Pricing

Pricing plays a big part in whether or not someone decides to use your services, but maybe not in the way that you may think.  Oftentimes, creative entrepreneurs will under price their products/services because they think that is the way to entice clients. But that strategy actually works to the contrary. Strategic pricing is all about perceived value. Make sure that your clients understand the value of what you do. It should be reflected in the description of what they will receive in working with you, as well as the quality of your marketing materials. Know your worth, and highlight why you are worth every penny!

Be Consistent

A key part of marketing is knowing where your ideal clients are hanging out, then determining how to get your marketing message in front of them. However you decide to do that, whether it’s blogging, social media, email marketing, etc., the key is to be consistent with your efforts.   It generally takes a client 5-7 points of contact before they are ready to make a purchasing decision, and they will only buy from those that they know, like, and trust. Being consistent with your efforts will keep you at the top of their mind when it is time to sign on the dotted line.

3 Reasons Your Business Is NOT Making Money…and How to Fix It!

How to Get Clients

Let’s face it: we’re all in business to make money. Even if you’re doing something that you absolutely LOVE and would do in a heartbeat if you weren’t getting paid, the reality is you have bills to pay, so you need your business to generate income.

As a business/marketing consultant, I speak with several entrepreneurs on a daily basis, and the most common question that I hear is “why am I not making any money?” You’re active on social media, blogging on a weekly basis, attending all of your local networking events…you know, all of the things that you should be doing. But, you still can’t seem to land enough clients to bring in a consistent cash flow. What gives?

There are many different factors that can contribute to this, but I am going to break down the three most common reasons your business may not be bringing in money:

You’re a Jack/Jill of All Trades

You are a photographer, but you also have your own jewelry line, sell homemade candles, makeup, and weight loss shakes. Your goal is to bring in multiple revenue streams. The problem? Your potential customers are confused! They don’t really know exactly what it is that you do because you are offering many different products and services, none of which go hand in hand with one another.

The Fix: Niche down. Decide on the ONE thing that you want to be known as the go-to person for, and do away with the rest. You can still create multiple streams of income by finding several different ways to profit from your primary offering (Example: if you are a photographer, consider adding a photo booth, teaching photography workshops, etc).

You Don’t Have a Solid Plan

Simply put: you’re winging it! You’re doing any and everything that you think you should do to find clients, but you really don’t have a solid strategy in place. Have you ever heard the saying “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail?” Well, it holds truth when it comes to marketing your business as well. If you want to attract more clients and start making money, you’ll have to create a strategic roadmap outlining how you will do so.

The Fix: Create a list of specific marketing activities that you will consistently engage in to increase brand awareness and attract new clients. Then implement, implement, implement! Be sure to include a timeframe to monitor each activity and measure its effectiveness before moving on to something else.

You Aren’t Selling Anything

When I first started my business, I knew that I wanted to teach other entrepreneurs how to create a marketing strategy for their business. I put up a website, I offered tips on social media, but I really didn’t have anything to sell, and, you guessed it, I wasn’t making a dime. Now, it may seem like a no-brainer that in order to make money, you have to have a product or service to sell, but I’ve come to realize that I wasn’t the only one not actually selling anything, while expecting clients to come my way.

The Fix: Get clear on your services and offerings. You should be able to clearly and confidently tell potential clients what you do and how it will benefit them if they choose to work with you.

7 Reasons Your Marketing is NOT Working (…and how to fix it!)

How to Create a Marketing Strategy

When was the last time you sat down and took a thorough look at your marketing plan?  Do you even have a marketing plan, or are you just flying by the seat of your pants, doing whatever you see others doing, or what you think you should be doing?

Successfully marketing a business requires clear and concise strategic planning.

If you are struggling to attract your ideal clients (you do know who they are, right?), your marketing efforts have not been working, and you’re not making sales, there are a few things that could be happening:

You are the hit it and quit it type

Now before your mind goes somewhere else, let me explain what I mean. If you post information about your business, products, and services in Facebook groups, Google+ communities, etc. (without interacting with the group) you are the hit it and quit it type. People will most likely NOT buy from you because a.) they don’t know you, and b.) you have not formed a relationship with them.  The sales process is an emotional one.  People buy from those that they know, like, and trust.  Yes, your products and services are important, BUT you will make more sales if you form a genuine relationship with your clients and make them feel as if you are the ONLY person with the solution to whatever problem they are having. So, stay away from BUY ME, BUY ME, BUY ME, that is the surest way to repel people away from your business.

You’re inconsistent

You’re really active on social media one week, then there’s crickets the next week OR you started blogging, then you seemed to fall off the face of the planet. Now, you have come to the realization that blogging and social media are NOT the way for you to get clients. WRONG!!! You have to be consistent if you want to see results.  If you do not stick with something long enough, you will never be able to determine whether or not it is working.

You’re not tracking your efforts

How can you determine if something is working or not if you are not tracking your efforts? Do you know where the bulk of your website’s traffic is coming from? Have you installed Google Analytics or another tracking service to check? How did your last few clients find you? You should be keeping some sort of spreadsheet, or come up with a system to track this information so you’ll know what’s working, what’s not working, and where to focus your time, efforts, and marketing/advertising dollars.

Your message is not clear

What do you offer? What products/services do you provide? Are you clearly articulating that in your marketing message? Make sure that potential clients can easily understand what it is that you do or sell without having to guess or take extra steps to find out. If you offer multiple products/services that do not relate to one another in any way, make sure you separate the two.

You haven’t defined/are not speaking to your target audience

A common mistake that entrepreneurs make is thinking that EVERYONE is their client. While it may be true that any and everyone can use your product or service, when it comes to marketing, you have to speak directly to those clients that you envision yourself working with. How do they speak? Where do they hang out? How much money do they make? The answers to these types of questions will help you determine how to go about reaching them.  When putting together your marketing message, act as if you are talking directly to your ideal client, who is sitting right in front of you.  How would you speak his/her language? If you have not already clearly defined who your ideal client is, I highly suggest that you take a moment to do that before you continue in your marketing efforts.   Knowing this information will save you a lot of time and effort chasing after the wrong clients, and help you begin to attract the right ones!

You’re focusing on YOU, not THEM

Your marketing message should focus on what you can do for your clients. What results will they achieve after working with you? Why should they work with you instead of the competition? Let the answer to these questions be the focal point. Focus on what you can give.Your prices are too low

Your prices are too low

Pricing plays a big part in whether someone decides to use your services, but maybe not in the way that you think. Oftentimes, entrepreneurs will underprice their products/services because they think that is the way to “entice” clients. But, it actually works to the contrary.  It is all about PERCEIVED value.  You have to make sure that your client understands the value of what you do.  That should be reflected in the quality of your marketing materials and what they will receive in working with you. You should know your strengths and be well versed in the benefits of working with you so that you can call attention to it when selling your services. It’s one thing to want money…everyone wants more…but it is something entirely different to be worth more.  Show your clients that you are WORTH more.

{Video} Are You Watering Your Business?

Some people think that the road to a successful business is a straight path, when it usually is filled with many twists, turns, bumps, and bruises along the way.

So, the other day, while I was outside watering my grass, I was hit with a thought: in a lot of ways, marketing a business can be compared to doing what it takes to make your grass grow.  Now, I know that may sound a little odd, but think about it.

When it comes to marketing your business, you have to plant the seeds and water it on a consistent basis if you want to see it grow.

{Event Recap} June Mogul Meetup

June Mogul Meetup

It is an AMAZING feeling to see your vision come to life!

That is exactly what happened when I hosted the first Mogul Meetup event a couple of weeks ago at the Microsoft Store in Century City!  All of the hard work, second-guessing (What if no one shows up? What if this is a complete failure?), and sleepless nights paid off, as the event was a success!

I had a vision to create a networking mixer that was really fun and interactive (not just your typical “networking event” where people hand out a million business cards without making any quality connections…boring!!!) while gaining the tips, resources, and tools to take their businesses/brands to the next level.   Mogul Meetups were born from this concept.

Kelsey Borlan Lee, co-founder of the duo The Brand Gals, a full service branding firm and photography studio, was the first guest speaker.  Kelsey walked attendees through the “6 Essentials of Building a Smashing Brand.”
