Brittney Castro - Financially Wise Women

Name: BRITTNEY CASTRO

Location: LOS ANGELES

Business Name: FINANCIALLY WISE WOMEN

Years in Business: 2 YEARS

Are you a full or part time business owner?

Full time.

Why did you start your business?

I started my business because I am very passionate about helping others, specifically women, use their money to live their dream lives. After being a financial planner working at other firms for about 7 years, I saw how savvy and successful women were still so intimidated by their money, and most avoided hiring a financial planner since most of the industry is still made up of male financial advisors.  I wanted to be the go-to financial planner for women and teach others to live an authentic and inspiring life by learning how to make, manage, save, invest, and protect their money in a fun and simple way.  My mission is to be the type of financial planner that changes the landscape for modern women and how they see and feel about their money, and is a pioneer for other women financial planners who want to help empower and educate women around money.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

The most rewarding aspect of having my own business is seeing the direct impact my advice and guidance brings to my client’s financial lives. I love hearing the success stories of my clients who tell me they love managing their money after working with me and make more money because they are now viewing their money in a whole new way. It is beyond rewarding to know I have helped them transform their financial lives from one of stress, overwhelm and anxiety to one of fun, excitement and peace of mind. Money is just a tool to be used however we desire in life and once my clients really commit to the financial planning relationship with me, so many magical things are possible for them. It’s so amazing and it inspires me to continue helping people with their finances, one woman at a time.

What are your biggest challenges?

The biggest challenge is managing all the different hats one must wear when owning a business. Every day I have to come fully ready to tackle the many roles of being a business owner and make sure I am leading my FWW team and clients in the right direction. It is not always easy but with the help of my amazing support group full of family and friends, I am able to constantly grow to become a better and better business owner and leader for my FWW tribe.

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

To enjoy the journey. I know it sounds cliché but it is so important to enjoy the ride. It is full of ups and downs, twists and turns and there is always “something” else to worry about, do, work on, etc. so you have to be able to cherish each moment and soak up as much of the journey as possible.

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

I have a team that consists of one assistant and one intern.

Brittney Castro - Financially Wise Women

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

I see the FWW business becoming more of a lifestyle brand that helps women create their ideal lives and expand into the media industry in order to do so. My goal is to continue serving as many women as possible through our financial planning services, online products, webinars, workshops, live conferences, and eventually launch the Financially Wise Women TV Show to help people understand that money can really be fun and simple. We have very lofty goals, but given our track record within the past two years of starting, I am only very excited to see where the FWW path takes us.

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

Keep your eye on the prize and keep going no matter what. When you follow your dreams and lead from your heart day in and day out, amazing things can happen in your life. I have been blown away by all that has come to me since starting my business and even when the naysayers and myself for that matter have doubted the goals I set out for myself, I’ve only been able to achieve more than what I imagined because I’ve stayed the course and followed my heart. Starting a business is not for the faintest of hearts but it is really incredible and if you have that burning desire inside you to launch your own business, do it. You only get one life if you are lucky so make the most of it!

MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Alisha Hall

Today’s Mogul in the Making Entreneur Spotlight features Alisha Hall, founder of the Golden Women Foundation.   After receiving a Bachelors degree in Arts, Entertainment Management with a concentration in the Music Business from Columbia College Chicago, Alicia moved to Los Angeles to work for the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) where she spent 10 years administering royalties and supporting the careers of composers, songwriters and publishers.  She got the idea to start Golden Women Foundation when she gathered some of her closest friends in one room to discuss some everyday topics.  Eight hours later, she knew this gathering had grown into something more than just a “conversation with the girls” but the beginning of establishing a network of women of worth and value.  Alisha is dedicated to encouraging women to becoming the best they can, not only for themselves but also for others around them.  Check out her story…

Alisha Hall - Golden Women Foundation

Name: Alisha Hall
Location: Los Angeles
Business Name: Golden Women Foundation
Years in Business: 6

Are you a full or part time business owner?
Full-Time

Why did you start your business?
In 2009, I had this deep desire to get a group of women together.  All of the women in my circle were dealing with difficulties and were too afraid to share them with anyone other than me.  My advice was limited, and I knew that if they could only open up, they could receive the help or healing they needed.  So I invited them all to our first retreat. This was unlike any other girls night out.  Mostly strangers to each other, we discussed some heavy and emotional topics.  We spoke of inspirations, defeats, pains, and victories. Leaving with so much encouragement, new friendships, and strength, I knew we had to keep this going because we were on to something great. I know now that when women open up and share their life experience, something powerful happens. When we encourage and support each other, something powerful happens. When we give back and serve others, our spirits are fulfilled. When you have a taste of that fulfillment, you never want to stop giving, encouraging, and sharing.

Alisha Hall - Golden Women Foundation

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?
I am rewarded by the peace I have at the end of my workday. I am the best co-worker I have ever had. I am diligent, I am encouraging, motivating…I do my part and I have fun while doing it. I don’t have a hidden agenda and I don’t keep secrets. I am open, so I receive all the great things in store for Golden Women Foundation. When I am blessed to have other co-workers beside myself, I have already created an awesome work environment. I have only been full-time for almost two-months but I absolutely love it! I know how hard I worked for my previous employer. I am excited about the work I am putting into Golden Women Foundation.

What are your biggest challenges?
Finding funding and grants are my biggest challenge. I know my strength is execution and getting the work done. Selling is not my strong point, however, if I focus on it as something that I must execute, I know it will get done. It will be a challenge but I will get funding. I am actually excited to see how well I do at it.

Alisha Hall - Golden Women Workshop

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?
One of the best pieces of business advice I received came a few days ago. I was told to not be afraid to do what I don’t know. I need to remember to remain faithful, fearless and open. My spirit led me to give back to my community so I am coming into it with good intentions. I believe I can’t fail if my intentions are good.

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?
I work with a board of directors. They are great guides and we vote and discuss all things that happen with the Foundation. They all have an expertise in different fields and collectively, we make a great team.

Alisha Hall - Golden Women Foundation

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?
I see Golden Women Foundation being the Google of resource for women that live Golden lives and want to be pillars in their community and in their homes. We all know where to go see funny memes, videos and new music. Golden Women Foundation needs to be the place to go when you want to live and lead an honorable lifestyle, and where you get and give encouragement.

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?
I had the will to do more for Golden Women Foundation in my heart everyday for the past 6 years. Every day that I didn’t take a step toward my dream/vision, it literally gave me anxiety. If God has put something in your heart to do, He won’t leave you alone until you get it done. Once you do, you will be living your life like it’s Golden!

Golden Women Foundation hosts a bi-weekly small business meetup, featuring an expert guest speaker presenting on various topics to help you move your business forward.  Check out there upcoming events, and come out and learn, network, and expand your business contacts!

It’s Official: I’m a Published Author!

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIwv3vIkw-A?rel=0%5D

I did it, Team Mogul! I finally finished writing my book, Unleash Your Inner Mogul: Your Guide to Building the Business and Lifestyle That You Desire…and Deserve!

For those of you that have been following along with me on social media (you are connected with me, right?!), you know that this has been a crazy journey, and a longgg time in the making.  I put in a lot of blood, sweat, and tears – literally – in order to get this project completed.  In fact, just a few weeks ago, I lost the flash drive that contained the entire book, and I hadn’t backed up the file (rookie mistake #1 and a MAJOR lesson learned).  At that point, I thought about giving up.  I thought it was a sign.  Who was I to write a book, anyway?

Then, I thought to myself, who am I not to write a book?!  I have a story to tell, and to not share my story would not only be doing a great disservice to myself, but also to the people that need to hear, and can relate to my service.  I figured that if my story could help make a difference in at least one person’s life, then my mission will be complete.  I eventually found my flash drive (hallelujah!).  I pressed forward and I got it done…and I couldn’t be more thrilled to see my vision finally come to life!

My book will be available on my website, as well as Amazon very soon! The official release date and details for the official book signing/launch party will be announced soon!

Thank you so much for all of the love, support, and encouraging words.  It truly helped me get through this process with my sanity intact.

Weekend Inspiration: Office Design

Hey there!

I am a firm believer that your surroundings play a HUGE part in your mood.  Lately, I’ve been feeling so BLAH whenever I sit down to work at my desk, which is situated in a tiny little nook in my bedroom.

As we head into the weekend, I am feeling motivated to do a major haul to my workspace.  I am making sure to include a trip to IKEA before the weekend is over, so I compiled a few pictures from around the web of some inspiring workspaces I love:

4 Success Lessons From a 6-Year Old

Children have some pretty interesting perspectives on life.  For those of us that are parents, we are given the responsibility of teaching our children life’s lessons.  But, if there is one thing that I’ve realized since becoming a parent, it is that adults can actually learn a lot from children.

Here are 4 lessons on success that my twin 6 year old daughters have taught me over the years:

NIkola Ahaiwe with Twin Daughters

1. Set Big Dreams
Remember when you were a kid, people would always ask “what do you want to be when you grow up?” and you would reply with a huge, sometimes far-reaching career goal?  Well, as a kid, there is no such thing as “dreaming too big”. When they decide they want to be, or do something, you better believe that they believe 100%, without a shadow of  doubt, that they will make it happen.  What if we carried those same beliefs over into our adult lives? Why do we let fear and doubt creep in when we’re older.  Try to get back that old, childlike belief system and go after your goals boldly and fearlessly.

2. Negotiate For What You Want
My youngest daughter is the Queen of negotiating.  No matter what offer I put on the table, she always has a rebuttal that would sweeten the pot in her favor.  While most times I shut her down and revert her back to the original “deal,” I can admire the fact that she at least knows how to ask for what she wants.  In business, things are no different.  Just because an offer is on the table doesn’t mean it is final.  The art of negotiation is a skill that you will most definitely need to acquire.  Yes, it will require you to be bold and confident enough to voice your opinions, but it is worth it.  You want to make sure you are getting deals that are fair and worth your while.

Don't Let One No Stop You

3. You Can’t Let One No Stop You
Why is it that the word “no” to a kid is not always a concrete no? Sometimes they’ll ask the same question again and again, even though they’ve already been shut down.  While it’s probably not a good idea to try that tactic, the lesson to be learned here is that one No does not have to be an end all, be all.  Let’s say you get rejected by a bank for a loan, or you have a proposal get rejected. Those are not reasons to give up.  You may not have gotten to your destination as fast or as easy as you would have liked, but it only means you need to figure out another route to get there.

4. If At First You Don’t Succeed, Keep Trying
I’m always amazed at my oldest daughter for her ability to keep trying, even when something does not come easy to her.  She just keeps pushing on until she figures it out.  As a business owner, you cannot be derailed if you fail…it’s all a part of the process.  The path to success is not always an easy one.  You will fail, and fail again. But, the only way to finally achieve success is to pick yourself up and try again every single time.  Always remember, failure is your greatest teacher.

What are some other lessons you’ve learned from a child, whether yours or someone else’s, that can be applied to your business, or life in general? Please leave a comment below.
