2016 Year In Review: My Year of GROWTH

As I sit here typing on this eve of the New Year, I am thinking about how absolutely giddy and excited I am about all that is to come in 2017!

2016 seemed to be a pretty rough year for many people. All throughout my social media feeds, I’ve seen countless posts with anticipation to end such a dreary year, and with hope that this upcoming year will be much better.

I am a generally happy, bubbly, and optimistic person (you kinda have to be when it is your job to motivate and speak life into others), but I must say that I experienced several challenges and personal setbacks this year that has me running to the finish line, and ready to leap into a year full of happiness, fulfillment, and abundance. In fact, I have declared that my word for 2017 will be LEAP.

Last year, I wrote my very first “Year in Review” post, and it was very therapeutic in a way. It was great to reflect back on all of the positive things that happened in my life as opposed to dwelling on the things that didn’t quite go as planned, or that downright sucked.

So, here goes…I bring to you my highlight reel of 2016:

Doubled My Number of Speaking Gigs

I achieved one of my top goals for the year, which was to double the number of speaking engagements that I had in 2015. Mission accomplished! Speaking and teaching are undoubtedly my two most favorite aspects of my business, so not only do I get to do what I absolutely LOVE, but I truly feel like I’m walking in my purpose every time I step on a stage or in front of a room. In 2017, I hope to keep it going by doubling my numbers again…and also to add INTERNATIONAL SPEAKER to my resume (Yes, I’m claiming it in advance!)

Launched My First Mini Course

This was a major accomplishment for two reasons: 1) I had been sitting on this idea for over a year, and finally took the time to make it a reality. I launched it as a mini course first, as a sort of test run leading up to the launch of my signature course, of the same name, that will be launching this year. 2.) I had absolutely NO knowledge of how to go about getting this done, but I didn’t let that stop me. I did the research. I implemented what I learned, and I DID IT. It was a lesson in not waiting until things are perfect, but instead, just getting started and improving as you go. I got a lot of really good feedback, and am so excited to launch the full course, in addition to several other courses, this year. Stay tuned!

Hosted My First Signature Event: Say YES to Your Dreams

Another “just do it” moment. I was going to wait until the new year to host this event, jut because I felt that January was the time when most people go into vision board/planning/goal setting mode. But I realized that mid-year was the perfect time to do an assessment of where you are in the pursuit of your goals and to get a little motivation to keep going. I’m happy to say that the event was a success! Each and every panel speaker was AMAZING and the women in attendance walked away with a lot of valuable information and the confidence to boldly walk in the direction of their dreams. Planning is already underway for the next event, which will be a little different, but equally, if not more, wonderful than the first!

Launched Moguls Give Back

I literally started Moguls Give Back on a whim! I wanted to find a way to give back to my community, and I figured what better way than to start my own initiative?! The goal was for my fellow entrepreneurs to band together and do our part to service our communities.  I reached out to my tribe via social media and was overwhelmed and thrilled at the amount of support it received. In the summer, we hosted a School Supply Drive where we were able to bless almost 100 students with all of the supplies they needed to have a successful school year. In November, we hosted a turkey giveaway, where we were able to bless 6 wonderful families. This could not have been done without the generous donations we received. A special thank you goes out to Kenya Kirkland of Shop 1323 for letting us host the first event at her boutique, and Shelley Mechette of The PowHERful Woman for being an official partner for the second event. In 2017, I hope to take these efforts to the next level by officially forming a non-profit 501(c)3, and hosting more charity events throughout the year.

Weight Loss Journey

My weight has been a big struggle for me for YEARS. Prior to being involved in the car accident that left me unable to walk for nearly 6 months, I was finally able to get a hold of it by dropping nearly 40lbs. Unfortunately, after that horrible ordeal, I just could not seem to get it back under control. The main reason was because I had on-going ankle issues that prevented me from working out the way that I would have liked to. This year, however, I decided not to let that hold be back anymore. I invested in a personal trainer (shout out to Lance Branchman) and finally started working toward my health and fitness goals again. In just the last two months of the year, I’ve been able to see a difference in, not only the way I look, but more importantly, the way I feel. Although the scale has only just recently started to be my friend (I wasn’t seeing much of a difference in my weight), I experienced so many non-scale victories, such as my clothes fitting better, loss of inches and a change in my body composition, better eating habits, and overall feeling healthier and stronger (I no longer feel like I am going to pass out after each workout lol). Also, its given me increased confidence that is showing up in other aspects of my life, and business. Therefore, I will continue training into the new year, and who knows…I may even run a marathon or two before the year is up!

Made Memories and Enjoyed Life

This was probably my most important fete of 2016…MAKING the time to experience life and make memories with those that I love. There is nothing like a near fatal experience to make you realize just how precious life is. Over the last few years, I’ve had this feeling that I’ve been merely existing, as opposed to living. This year, I can truly say I took my first steps to changing that by getting out there and making memories with my loved ones. After all, one of the main reasons I started my business was to have full freedom and control of my time, and because I wanted to live life on my own terms. In 2016, I finally figured out exactly what that looks like…

Took a couple of Kid-cations (vacays with the kiddos)…a road trip to San Diego and to visit family in Texas…

Nikola Ahaiwe - Time Freedom

Spent a lot of quality time going on family outings and experiencing fun, new places.

Nikola Ahaiwe - Time Freedom

…was even able to get in a few Mom-cations (without the kiddos) to Catalina Island and Washington DC.

Nikola Ahaiwe - Time Freedom

…and I made a conscious effort to get out more and support friends, family, and fellow business owners at their events, celebrating life occasions, and on their creative endeavors.

Nikola Ahaiwe - Time Freedom

I know a lot of people that experienced quite a few challenges and hardships in 2016 (myself included), but it’s so important to take a step back and remind yourself of all of the things that went well, all of the things you’re grateful for, and the many blessings that you have in spite of everything else.

Now that you’ve had a glimpse into my year, I want to know:

4 Business Lessons a Comedian Taught Me…

Kevin Hart on Steve Harvey Morning ShowPhoto via Kevin Hart’s Facebook Page

Yesterday morning, as I was taking my kiddos to school, I happened to catch an interview with comedian Kevin Hart on the The Steve Harvey radio show.

Although I love his work as a comedian (he is HILARIOUS!) and actor, I didn’t realize that he was also a phenomenal businessman.

During his interview, he dropped some major jewels that can be translated to pretty much any business.

Here are 4 business lessons Kevin Hart taught me…

1. Don’t let NO stop you. Several studios turned down his idea to turn his live standup shows into movies because they said they would never bring in a profit. Since then, he’s gone on to make over a hundred million dollars and has become one of the highest paid comedians ever.

2. Believe in your brand and vision enough to INVEST IN YOURSELF. He used over 13 million of his own money to fund a project that others would not back, because he was that passionate about it, and was willing to TAKE A RISK for what he believed in. He went on to sell out a 50,000 seat stadium…as a comedian. That has never been done. He made history!

3. If there is a void in the marketplace, FILL IT. He now has his own subscription based network, similar to Tidal. He saw them raking in the money and thought to himself that there was nothing out there like that for comedy, so HE CREATED IT!

4. Use your platform to HELP OTHERS GET ON. He said when you see him going hard promoting his stuff, its not just for his gain. It’s so that he can continue provide opportunities and platforms for others. His vision is bigger than himself. When you make it to the top, its only right that you reach back and pull others up with you, especially those that helped you get there.

I have a new found respect for Kevin. His work ethic is something to be admired.

How can you use these lessons in your business?

Recap: The List Tour Conference

If you want your business to flourish and grow, it is an absolute MUST, that you continue to invest in ongoing training, seek more knowledge, and learn new skills.

A great way to do that is to attend workshops, conferences, and live events that will teach you new strategies and equip you with the resources  and tools you need to take your biz to the next level.  I swear every time I leave an event, I walk away feeling pumped up and ready to take the (business) world by storm!

So, when the the opportunity arose for me to attend The List Tour conference, hosted by LaTanya Washington, founder of LW Special Events Management, I knew that I HAD to be there.

The List Tour Los Angeles Business Conference

What a wonderful event it was! The day was filled with a stellar line up of speakers.  Overall, it was a high energy, fun-filled day of learning, networking, and growth.  Attendees left with actionable steps that they could implement to uplevel their businesses and processes in the areas of marketing, branding, systems, staffing and much, much more.

Highlights included a breakout jam session to Beyonce’s Formation, a Shark Tank-style pitch session that brought contestants to tears at the possibility of seeing their vision come to life, and witnessing a pair of mini-moguls share their business concept.

Check out some of my key takeaways:

Dr. Monica Wilson – Psychotherapist, Business Consultant

– Don’t sit on your gifts. To thine own self be true. Turn your pain into your purpose.

– Your purpose is not about you…it’s bigger than you. You’re making a mark in the world, unseen or seen.

Constance Moonzwe – Executive Director, ITH Staffing

Constance Moonzwe The List Tour Los Angeles Business Conference
– Sometimes you may have the vision, but you may not be the right person to drive your business forward. Figure out what you’re good at, what you’re not good at, and partner with someone to help you.

– Finding ‘A Players” begins with setting the bar high. Your organization doesn’t have roomfor B, C, or D players. A players are people that can do 90% of the position well.

Dawn Osborne – Next Level Management & Consulting

Dawn Osborne The List Tour Los Angeles Business Conference– Focused action beats brilliance every time. Genius is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration.

– You need a niche instead of being a generalist – jack of all trades, master of none.

– If you don’t believe in your product or service, do something else. You have to believe in it in order to sell it to someone else.

Lydia & Peter Mehit – Custom Business Planning & Solutions

Lydia and Peter Mehit The List Tour Los Angeles Business Conference

– Focus on the customer FIRST, then the product. If you know who your customer is, then you’ll know how to market to them.

– Price your products or services at a price that YOU are uncomfortable. If you are comfortable, you are not charging enough.

Queenie Johnson – Brand Strategist, Mama Be Brilliant

Queenie Johnson The List Tour Los Angeles Business Conference

Things you need to release (that you’ve been taught)

  1. Fear
  2. A mentality that there is not enough
  3. The thought that you can’t trust anybody.
  4. The need for validation. The reason you’re stagnant right now is because someone is not telling you “good job.”
  5. Fear of failure

– You’ve been trained out of your authority, and it’s YOUR job to decide to rule your world.

– Have a big message, but tailor it according to who you’re speaking to.

– Your message has to pull at the gut, count the cost, and be energetically exciting, and it has to be about THEM, not you.

Sweenie May – Marketing Mastermind Coach

Sweeney Mae The List Tour Los Angeles Business Conference

Profile your target market – Study and speak their language.

Learn (and master) the difference between a soft sell vs. a hard sell

The day was PACKED with valuable content…no fluff. Exactly what I look for when determining the events that are worth my time and monetary investment. The List Tour is definitely worth it!

It was also a great opportunity to network, and see a few of my fave women in business:

BIG thank you, and congratulations goes out to LaTonya Washington for organizing such a wonderful event. It was such an honor to be a part of this interactive experience!

Are you a full or part time business owner?

I’m a full time business owner.

Why did you start your business?

I started my business because I’m passionate about inspiring women to discover their purpose and launch businesses that are flowing directly from it. In working with women on a daily basis in my boutique, Shop 1323, I have the opportunity to use style to motivate, inspire, and encourage. I decided to do more of it!

Kenya Kirkland - The Style Icon

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

The most rewarding aspect of owning my own business is the freedom I have to be a mother. I don’t have to ask for time off. My kids can go to work with me. There’s no ceiling on how much money I can make. I love that the possibilities are endless. And lastly, there is no one to control my creativity. I create what I want, when I want.

What are your biggest challenges?

The biggest challenge of being self employed is that there is no regular pay check to depend on, no 401k, no paid sick days, no paid vacation. You eat what you hunt. It can be both a blessing and a curse.

Kenya Kirkland - The Style Icon

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

The best business advice I’ve ever received was to create or offer a product that my current target market desires versus selling a product and being forced to find a market. There are people around you that need and /or want something. What is it?

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

I have an amazing team. For years, I was a one woman show. I recently activated Faith for a team. I prayed about it and sewed a seed and my team was created! I’m so thankful to have help. It’s such a blessing to witness my vision come to life.

Kenya Kirkland - The Style Icon

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

In 5 years, I’ll be traveling the world speaking, hosting workshops and mentoring world changers to launch amazing businesses globally.

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

My advice to other Moguls in the Making is to have Faith and Trust in God. Every setback is a set up, so don’t stop. Just keep pushing through! Surround yourself with people who are in alignment with your vision…and don’t compromise.

She is a Marriage and Family Therapist Registered Intern specializing in improving intimacy with couples by increasing effective two-way communication. As a graduate of Azusa Pacific University, Kiaundra is currently serving a broad spectrum of clients. Among her areas of expertise are: Premarital and Marital Issues, Anger Management, Addiction, Depression, and more! Her therapeutic approach is holistic, eclectic, and tailored to her clients’ needs to make sure each person is cared for biologically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Check out her interview…

Kiaundra Jackson - KW Essential Services
Name: Kiaundra Jackson
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Business Name: KW Essential Services
Years in Business: 6 months

Are you a full or part time business owner?

I am currently a part-time business owner; however, I am looking to become full-time within one year.

Why did you start your business?

I co-founded KW Essential Services out of a desire to see more individuals, couples, and families reach their true potential. Going through my own personal and familial struggles allowed me to see the areas where others may also need assistance. As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I have seen too many broken homes and people struggling through life’s challenges. My passion is working with couples so my goal is to help them maintain a healthy, long-lasting relationship by giving them the necessary tools for each stage in their relationship.

Kiaundra Jackson - KW Essential Services

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

The most rewarding aspect of having my own business is seeing lives changed, relationships restored, and families reconnected right in front of my very eyes. The joy that comes with knowing the business I started, has changed other’s lives in a positive way is priceless. Many may not understand this concept, but there is something special about being able to walk with someone through the toughest times of their lives. Leaving that kind of lasting imprint is one of the best feelings in the world. In addition, the freedom to create my own schedule, not have to answer to a boss, or have someone determine by worth based on my yearly salary are also aspects that have been quite rewarding.

What are your biggest challenges?

Truthfully, my biggest challenge has been the person in the mirror. Starting my own business has been the best time of my life, but also the most challenging. It has required me to push myself harder than I have ever pushed myself to accomplish any goal. My whole life has changed because I had to get outside of my comfort zone, which also meant changing my thinking and leaving behind the familiar.

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I have ever received was from a woman who told me to always be a woman of integrity. That is something I will never forget because I have embodied it into my daily life. It is important to always keep your word, be honest, and as consistent as possible. When others see those values, they are drawn to your character and cannot help but want to be associated with you on a personal or professional level.

Kiaundra Jackson - KW Essential Services

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

Wendy Talley is also the co-founder of KW Essential Services. Not only is she a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, but she is also my rock. I would not be here today if it were not for her seeing something unique in me from the first time we met. We are such kindred spirits that people think we are sisters everywhere we go. There is no other person I would rather be on this journey with. Her education, expertise, and theoretical approach are complementary to mine which makes our business partnership a match made in heaven.

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

I have huge goals for KW Essential Services. Within the next 5 years, we will be a thriving private practice serving the greater Los Angeles area and abroad. We aspire to be well-known in the field of mental health by providing workshops, seminars, conferences, and trainings. We want to expand beyond serving those in need to also helping leverage other mental health professionals to accomplish their professional goals.

Kiaundra Jackson - KW Essential Services

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

The advice I would give to other Moguls in the Making is to continue to strive towards your goals, even in the face of adversity. Never allow giving up to be an option for you. The road to success may get hard, frustrating, and lonely, but the results will be worth it. I would encourage every person to pursue his or her passions in life. God designed us all to be different and unique for the purpose of using our gifts, talents, resources, ideas, and services to be a blessing to others. Therefore, someone in the world is in need of the very thing you have to offer.

MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Cortney Ren’ae

Cortney Renae

It’s backkkk…finally!!!! *Drumroll Please* I have a new Mogul in the Making entrepreneur spotlight today, featuring Cortney Ren’ae, founder of Flourishe, a promotional media company that offers solutions to businesses, corporations and entrepreneurs to spotlight their brand, grow visibility and connect to their audience. This is why she is affectionately known as “the expert connector”.  When she is not behind the lens shooting weddings, special events, promotional events, etc., you can find Cortney teaching video marketing workshops, hosting her own networking/collaborative events, or hanging out with her too-adorable-for-words daughter.  Check out Cortney’s interview below…

Cortney Renae Flourishe Media Group

Name: Cortney Ren’ae
Location: Los Angeles
Business Name: Flourishe
Years in Business: 5 years

Are you a full or part time business owner?

I am full time.

Why did you start your business?

I started Flourishe originally with the intention to connect with other moms because I was a new stay-at-home mother and found myself wanting to learn how I could grow to be a great mom and my best self. I wanted to create a vehicle that would simply empower others. Today, the focus is definitely more of a niche, now having Flourishe Media Group as a department under the umbrella, but the overall focus to empower others to grow is still there, which is the beautiful part of this entire vision & creation.

Cortney Renae1

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

The most rewarding aspect of owning my own business is definitely being able to create my own schedule. Where I choose to work for the day, whether its from my bed in my pj’s, or in a quaint coffee shop I run across. I go with the flow when I don’t have a shoot scheduled, and of course work around my daughter’s schedule all at the same time.

What are your biggest challenges?

My biggest challenges, I would say, have been to charge my worth. I was programmed with this mentality of believing that I had to be great at what I do but to also be the most affordable so people would buy. I’ve done some work around breaking down this way of thinking and performing because over time, what I’ve learned is that not charging my worth, only created more problems that cost me time, and even more money.

Cortney Renae Flourishe Media Group

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I’ve received was from a spiritual reader who was sent to me at what I feel couldn’t have been a better time in my life. She told me to “Never let anyone, EVER dim my light! That I have a light in me that shines SO bright…..and to remember to let that shine!”

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

I have a team of professionals I work with. Outside of the coaches I have to guide me in both my business & personal life, I have shooters that I’ll pull from our preferred vendor list, which includes some amazingly talented videographers and photographers. I’ve also began working with an incredible business who will be running our social media accounts and handling the communications with our clients on the back end, and I’m super excited about that! Once I can officially hire them FULL time, it’s going to be amazing!

Cortney Renae Flourishe Media Group

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

I see Flourishe being finely positioned in the market to be a go-to place to find information on empowering/inspiring events, training workshops, a place to find the latest industry leaders and the projects that need our community support. Flourishe Media Group will be a solutions provider to corporations & businesses, helping them to market & grow their business in this virtual world using multimedia.

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

The advice I’d give to others is to NEVER EVER QUIT on yourself and your dreams. To step out and be BOLD, having the FAITH that your vision is happening for a reason and it’s your responsibility to make it happen. When God gives you an assignment….it won’t go away. It will constantly show up in your thoughts, your dreams and your conversations as you talk about what your naturally talented in and what you can create. Step up, step out and be ready to make the changes necessary so that you can flourishe and continuously move into your next level of excellence.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Name: Keisha Howard
Location: Dallas, TX
Business Name: Coach Keisha
Years in Business: 5

Are you a full or part time business owner?

Fulltime

Why did you start your business?

I had been working as a School Counselor for several years and I saw a need for a self-esteem service for girls, so I decided that enough was enough and I wanted to start one. I struggled with self-esteem my teen years, and made poor choices because of it. Then, when I was a School Counselor I saw many girls struggling just like I did. So, I made it my life’s mission to not only provide a service that gives girls an outlet to talk to someone who they can trust, but I am also their support system, accountability partner, and I give them tools and strategies to help them achieve their goals. My ultimate goal is to both empower girls and educate parents on the latest hot topic and trends affecting middle and high school girls.

Keisha Howard2

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

The most rewarded aspect has been the girls’ & mom’s lives who I am able to touch. I also enjoy speaking at schools, churches, colleges and conferences which has been a lot of fun and rewarding because I am able to meet girls all across the country.

What are your biggest challenges?

Time management between all of my various programs

Keisha Howard3

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

To start before you are ready. Just get going. There will always be some type of excuse why you are not ready to start your business ( need a new website, need a new logo, etc. ) But, you should start before you are ready to get going.

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

I have a VA and an Online Business Manager.

Keisha Howard4

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

I see myself impacting more lives of girls and moms- traveling internationally to speak at events, and hosting more online group coaching programs.

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

Don’t compare yourself to others – comparison kills confidence. Believe in you, and start before you are ready.

Have you said to yourself that 2016 will be the year that you finally write your book?  Have you been sitting on an idea for your book forever, but just don’t know where to start?  Are you ready to share your message and story with the world, and serve your clients on a much bigger scale?

Did you know that writing a book gives you instant credibility, positions you as an expert in your field, and can help you take your business to the next level? Since publishing and releasing my first book, my coaching/consulting business has soared, and I’ve been invited to speak at several conferences, workshops, and events this year…all as a result of positioning myself as a thought leader by becoming an author.

Many people have reached out to me to express that they’ve been wanting to write a book forever but 1. Have no idea where to start 2. Can’t find the motivation to finish it, or 3. They’ve completed the entire book but have no idea what to do next.

So, I’ve decided to host a FREE, live workshop: 6 Weeks to Self Published – How to Profit as a Self-Published Author, to help answer some of the most frequently asked questions I’ve received.

Join me on Thursday, November 19 at 7pm PST, as I show you how you can write, self-publish, and market your book…in just six weeks!

Are you a full or part time business owner?

Part-time. Full-time Educator.

Why did you start your business?

To offer parents strategies and techniques to help their children excel in school and prepare for a successful life.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

Seeing parents change their thinking with regards to parenting, and being more.  Seeing enough evidence of children raising their grades in school as a result of being willing to improve their personal and parenting skills in the interest of their kids strategic parental involvement.

Nicoline Ambe1

What are your biggest challenges?

Booking more speaking engagements, building better relationships that result in more prospects and clients, getting paid what the content and information is worth, and getting known and recognized for my expertise.

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

Believe in yourself, and believe in the value of the product you offer.

Nicoline Ambe3

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

I have a team of one: my assistant. He drives me to speaking engagements and handles book sales during events while I’m speaking with parents.

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

To be honest with you, I love what I do. I enjoy the process and the journey. I have no goals and no timelines. Each waking day, I simply decide to do one thing to move the business forward. Perhaps the one thing could be making one phone call, following up on a client, sending an email, writing my newsletter, marketing on social media. I see my business as just one aspect of my busy life…just one aspect of the grand scheme of things that life offers. So I am just having fun and not stressing out about long term goals. Maybe that’s why I’m still part-time (but I’m okay with that too!)

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

I would say STAY FOCUSED ON YOURSELF. Take plenty of time to THINK. I would also say, be healthy. Business is extremely difficult, and if you’re not in good shape, you won’t have stamina and energy to keep going for a long time. Your body helps you live your dreams, so take care of it by eating healthy foods and staying fit.  Lastly, think through your ideas, think through your strategies, then take immediate ACTION to implement your ideas. Always pray for vision and discernment because it is vision that drives the action.

Melissa Hibbert - Sheeq Cosmetics Behind the Glam

Name: Melissa R. Hibbert
Location: Beverly Hills, CA
Title: Celebrity Makeup Artist & Beauty Entrepreneur
Business Name: Beauty by Melissa Hibbert and SHEEQ Cosmetics
Years in Business: 4 years

Are you a full or part time business owner?
I am a fulltime business owner

Why did you start your business?
Beauty is my passion. I worked in Corporate Marketing for 14 years and I was, by all accounts successful, but my true calling is running a thriving business in Beauty.

Melissa Hibbert Sheeq Cosmetics

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?
The most rewarding aspect of having my own business is never having to wait for permission to do things I want to do and bring my ideas to life. I have the freedom to create and maximize my full potential with no limitations. That is the beauty of having my own business!

What are your biggest challenges?
The biggest challenges are wearing many hats and making sure things are balanced and not vulnerable due to being spread too thin. The other challenge is ensuring that you are accountable for not only the brand but the spending – it’s easy to want to participate, sponsor, do events, donate etc., but I have learned to say No, and be comfortable with those decisions. Not everyone will understand your business strategy, so it’s important to have a sense of discernment in all aspects of my business.

Melissa Hibbert - Sheeq Cosmetics Behind the Glam

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I’ve received is to never sell myself short…to know that my time, skills, ideas, creativity etc., all have value and worth.

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?
I do have a go to team. These are people that I trust and I find to be reliable when I need them. When I first started, I was a one woman show but over time, I have been much more open to delegate responsibilities and trust that they will be executed to my standard.

Melissa Hibbert5

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?
Overall, in 5 years, I see myself leading my thriving Beauty empire that encompasses my cosmetics line, web & television content, publications, events and management firm all of which will empower, entertain, and inspire others through Beauty.

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?
My advice to Moguls in the Making is to believe 100% in yourself and to never be afraid to shine. There is a purpose and calling on all of our lives and in order to thrive and succeed, it will require all of us to let our light shine bright and to be excellent in each and every endeavor. When we shine, we give others permission to do the same.
