Event Recap: South LA Saves Power and Purpose Conference

2017 Power and Purpose Conference

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending the 2017 South LA Saves Power and Purpose Conference. What a great time it was!

I knew from the moment that the speaker line up was announced that this would be a powerful, life-changing event.

South LA Saves Power and Purpose Conference

The conference started out on a high note as keynote speaker Jarim Person Lynn, wealth coach, author, and founder of Brass Knuckle Finance, took the stage to share the 7 Steps to Zero Debt. I’ve followed Jarim on social media for quite some time, and have even read one of his books, so I was really excited to finally have the opportunity to meet him in person. I love his direct, no-nonsense, tough love approach to teaching debt reduction, investing, and wealth building, and his presentation did not disappoint. Key take-away: 76% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck (yikes!) and would not be able to survive a period of extended job loss. Too often we mistake sacrifice for hard living. You have to reduce the things that take away from your cash flow and invest more of that income.

Next up, there was a panel discussion and q&a session featuring a talented line up of inspiring entrepreneurs. There were so many jewels of wisdom being dropped, I think my pen was working a mile a minute as I took notes! Some of my favorite nuggets:

Restee Collins, founder of The Blueprint Project:

  • You can have an abundance mindset even when you’re in poverty. It’s a choice.
  • If you don’t know something, go to Google to figure out how to figure it out! Don’t allow what you don’t know to cause you to be stagnant.

Billionaire P.A. – Founder of Wealthy Minds, Inc.:

  • Don’t suppress your dreams to support someone else’s ego.
  • You don’t have to be perfect to be successful.

Power and Purpose Conference - Panel

Deanna Dupree – Wardrobe Stylist, CEO Deanna’s Style Haus

  • You don’t have to be one dimensional. It’s ok to be multi-passionate and multi-talented.
  • Do what you do best and outsource the rest. If you can’t execute something, find someone who can.

Toushonta Hogan – Founder of Scentscational Soaps (whose product line is now available in Target stores…soooo proud of her!!!!)

  • Bad days don’t exist. Any day that you wake up is a good day!
  • Even when you feel like giving up, keep going. Your time will come.

2017 Power and Purpose Conference - Panel

The session was wrapped up by keynote speaker Michelle Harris Collins, founder and program director of n

, sharing tips on how to be a Better You. It all starts with your choice, character, and competitive edge.

2017 Power and Purpose - Michelle Harris Collins

She went on to explain that you have no right to be underneath your circumstances (something I can definitely relate to). Your life is not only about who you are now, but also who you can become.

Check out a few more highlights from the day:

2016 Year In Review: My Year of GROWTH

As I sit here typing on this eve of the New Year, I am thinking about how absolutely giddy and excited I am about all that is to come in 2017!

2016 seemed to be a pretty rough year for many people. All throughout my social media feeds, I’ve seen countless posts with anticipation to end such a dreary year, and with hope that this upcoming year will be much better.

I am a generally happy, bubbly, and optimistic person (you kinda have to be when it is your job to motivate and speak life into others), but I must say that I experienced several challenges and personal setbacks this year that has me running to the finish line, and ready to leap into a year full of happiness, fulfillment, and abundance. In fact, I have declared that my word for 2017 will be LEAP.

Last year, I wrote my very first “Year in Review” post, and it was very therapeutic in a way. It was great to reflect back on all of the positive things that happened in my life as opposed to dwelling on the things that didn’t quite go as planned, or that downright sucked.

So, here goes…I bring to you my highlight reel of 2016:

Doubled My Number of Speaking Gigs

I achieved one of my top goals for the year, which was to double the number of speaking engagements that I had in 2015. Mission accomplished! Speaking and teaching are undoubtedly my two most favorite aspects of my business, so not only do I get to do what I absolutely LOVE, but I truly feel like I’m walking in my purpose every time I step on a stage or in front of a room. In 2017, I hope to keep it going by doubling my numbers again…and also to add INTERNATIONAL SPEAKER to my resume (Yes, I’m claiming it in advance!)

Just a few of the other workshops and events I had the honor of speaking at this year. In 2017 I will be better about getting pics of my speaking gigs.

Launched My First Mini Course

This was a major accomplishment for two reasons: 1) I had been sitting on this idea for over a year, and finally took the time to make it a reality. I launched it as a mini course first, as a sort of test run leading up to the launch of my signature course, of the same name, that will be launching this year. 2.) I had absolutely NO knowledge of how to go about getting this done, but I didn’t let that stop me. I did the research. I implemented what I learned, and I DID IT. It was a lesson in not waiting until things are perfect, but instead, just getting started and improving as you go. I got a lot of really good feedback, and am so excited to launch the full course, in addition to several other courses, this year. Stay tuned!

Hosted My First Signature Event: Say YES to Your Dreams

Another “just do it” moment. I was going to wait until the new year to host this event, jut because I felt that January was the time when most people go into vision board/planning/goal setting mode. But I realized that mid-year was the perfect time to do an assessment of where you are in the pursuit of your goals and to get a little motivation to keep going. I’m happy to say that the event was a success! Each and every panel speaker was AMAZING and the women in attendance walked away with a lot of valuable information and the confidence to boldly walk in the direction of their dreams. Planning is already underway for the next event, which will be a little different, but equally, if not more, wonderful than the first!

Launched Moguls Give Back

I literally started Moguls Give Back on a whim! I wanted to find a way to give back to my community, and I figured what better way than to start my own initiative?! The goal was for my fellow entrepreneurs to band together and do our part to service our communities.  I reached out to my tribe via social media and was overwhelmed and thrilled at the amount of support it received. In the summer, we hosted a School Supply Drive where we were able to bless almost 100 students with all of the supplies they needed to have a successful school year. In November, we hosted a turkey giveaway, where we were able to bless 6 wonderful families. This could not have been done without the generous donations we received. A special thank you goes out to Kenya Kirkland of Shop 1323 for letting us host the first event at her boutique, and Shelley Mechette of The PowHERful Woman for being an official partner for the second event. In 2017, I hope to take these efforts to the next level by officially forming a non-profit 501(c)3, and hosting more charity events throughout the year.

Weight Loss Journey

My weight has been a big struggle for me for YEARS. Prior to being involved in the car accident that left me unable to walk for nearly 6 months, I was finally able to get a hold of it by dropping nearly 40lbs. Unfortunately, after that horrible ordeal, I just could not seem to get it back under control. The main reason was because I had on-going ankle issues that prevented me from working out the way that I would have liked to. This year, however, I decided not to let that hold be back anymore. I invested in a personal trainer (shout out to Lance Branchman) and finally started working toward my health and fitness goals again. In just the last two months of the year, I’ve been able to see a difference in, not only the way I look, but more importantly, the way I feel. Although the scale has only just recently started to be my friend (I wasn’t seeing much of a difference in my weight), I experienced so many non-scale victories, such as my clothes fitting better, loss of inches and a change in my body composition, better eating habits, and overall feeling healthier and stronger (I no longer feel like I am going to pass out after each workout lol). Also, its given me increased confidence that is showing up in other aspects of my life, and business. Therefore, I will continue training into the new year, and who knows…I may even run a marathon or two before the year is up!

Made Memories and Enjoyed Life

This was probably my most important fete of 2016…MAKING the time to experience life and make memories with those that I love. There is nothing like a near fatal experience to make you realize just how precious life is. Over the last few years, I’ve had this feeling that I’ve been merely existing, as opposed to living. This year, I can truly say I took my first steps to changing that by getting out there and making memories with my loved ones. After all, one of the main reasons I started my business was to have full freedom and control of my time, and because I wanted to live life on my own terms. In 2016, I finally figured out exactly what that looks like…

Took a couple of Kid-cations (vacays with the kiddos)…a road trip to San Diego and to visit family in Texas…

Nikola Ahaiwe - Time Freedom

Spent a lot of quality time going on family outings and experiencing fun, new places.

…was even able to get in a few Mom-cations (without the kiddos) to Catalina Island and Washington DC.

Nikola Ahaiwe - Time Freedom

…and I made a conscious effort to get out more and support friends, family, and fellow business owners at their events, celebrating life occasions, and on their creative endeavors.

Nikola Ahaiwe - Time Freedom

I know a lot of people that experienced quite a few challenges and hardships in 2016 (myself included), but it’s so important to take a step back and remind yourself of all of the things that went well, all of the things you’re grateful for, and the many blessings that you have in spite of everything else.

Now that you’ve had a glimpse into my year, I want to know:

4 Business Lessons a Comedian Taught Me…

Kevin Hart on Steve Harvey Morning ShowPhoto via Kevin Hart’s Facebook Page

Yesterday morning, as I was taking my kiddos to school, I happened to catch an interview with comedian Kevin Hart on the The Steve Harvey radio show.

Although I love his work as a comedian (he is HILARIOUS!) and actor, I didn’t realize that he was also a phenomenal businessman.

During his interview, he dropped some major jewels that can be translated to pretty much any business.

Here are 4 business lessons Kevin Hart taught me…

1. Don’t let NO stop you. Several studios turned down his idea to turn his live standup shows into movies because they said they would never bring in a profit. Since then, he’s gone on to make over a hundred million dollars and has become one of the highest paid comedians ever.

2. Believe in your brand and vision enough to INVEST IN YOURSELF. He used over 13 million of his own money to fund a project that others would not back, because he was that passionate about it, and was willing to TAKE A RISK for what he believed in. He went on to sell out a 50,000 seat stadium…as a comedian. That has never been done. He made history!

3. If there is a void in the marketplace, FILL IT. He now has his own subscription based network, similar to Tidal. He saw them raking in the money and thought to himself that there was nothing out there like that for comedy, so HE CREATED IT!

4. Use your platform to HELP OTHERS GET ON. He said when you see him going hard promoting his stuff, its not just for his gain. It’s so that he can continue provide opportunities and platforms for others. His vision is bigger than himself. When you make it to the top, its only right that you reach back and pull others up with you, especially those that helped you get there.

I have a new found respect for Kevin. His work ethic is something to be admired.

How can you use these lessons in your business?

Recap: The List Tour Conference

If you want your business to flourish and grow, it is an absolute MUST, that you continue to invest in ongoing training, seek more knowledge, and learn new skills.

A great way to do that is to attend workshops, conferences, and live events that will teach you new strategies and equip you with the resources  and tools you need to take your biz to the next level.  I swear every time I leave an event, I walk away feeling pumped up and ready to take the (business) world by storm!

So, when the the opportunity arose for me to attend The List Tour conference, hosted by LaTanya Washington, founder of LW Special Events Management, I knew that I HAD to be there.

The List Tour Los Angeles Business Conference

What a wonderful event it was! The day was filled with a stellar line up of speakers.  Overall, it was a high energy, fun-filled day of learning, networking, and growth.  Attendees left with actionable steps that they could implement to uplevel their businesses and processes in the areas of marketing, branding, systems, staffing and much, much more.

Highlights included a breakout jam session to Beyonce’s Formation, a Shark Tank-style pitch session that brought contestants to tears at the possibility of seeing their vision come to life, and witnessing a pair of mini-moguls share their business concept.

Check out some of my key takeaways:

Dr. Monica Wilson – Psychotherapist, Business Consultant

– Don’t sit on your gifts. To thine own self be true. Turn your pain into your purpose.

– Your purpose is not about you…it’s bigger than you. You’re making a mark in the world, unseen or seen.

Constance Moonzwe – Executive Director, ITH Staffing

Constance Moonzwe The List Tour Los Angeles Business Conference
– Sometimes you may have the vision, but you may not be the right person to drive your business forward. Figure out what you’re good at, what you’re not good at, and partner with someone to help you.

– Finding ‘A Players” begins with setting the bar high. Your organization doesn’t have roomfor B, C, or D players. A players are people that can do 90% of the position well.

Dawn Osborne – Next Level Management & Consulting

Dawn Osborne The List Tour Los Angeles Business Conference– Focused action beats brilliance every time. Genius is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration.

– You need a niche instead of being a generalist – jack of all trades, master of none.

– If you don’t believe in your product or service, do something else. You have to believe in it in order to sell it to someone else.

Lydia & Peter Mehit – Custom Business Planning & Solutions

Lydia and Peter Mehit The List Tour Los Angeles Business Conference

– Focus on the customer FIRST, then the product. If you know who your customer is, then you’ll know how to market to them.

– Price your products or services at a price that YOU are uncomfortable. If you are comfortable, you are not charging enough.

Queenie Johnson – Brand Strategist, Mama Be Brilliant

Queenie Johnson The List Tour Los Angeles Business Conference

Things you need to release (that you’ve been taught)

  1. Fear
  2. A mentality that there is not enough
  3. The thought that you can’t trust anybody.
  4. The need for validation. The reason you’re stagnant right now is because someone is not telling you “good job.”
  5. Fear of failure

– You’ve been trained out of your authority, and it’s YOUR job to decide to rule your world.

– Have a big message, but tailor it according to who you’re speaking to.

– Your message has to pull at the gut, count the cost, and be energetically exciting, and it has to be about THEM, not you.

Sweenie May – Marketing Mastermind Coach

Sweeney Mae The List Tour Los Angeles Business Conference

Profile your target market – Study and speak their language.

Learn (and master) the difference between a soft sell vs. a hard sell

The day was PACKED with valuable content…no fluff. Exactly what I look for when determining the events that are worth my time and monetary investment. The List Tour is definitely worth it!

It was also a great opportunity to network, and see a few of my fave women in business:

4 Tips for Following Up With Prospects

4 Tips for Following Up WIth Prospects

4 Tips for Following Up WIth Prospects

Did you know that so much money is left on the table, and business missed out on, simply due to not following up?!

Let me give you a couple of scenarios…

– A potential client reaches out to you and are not ready to book at the moment. Do you reach out to them at a later date to see where they are with their decision, or wait until they call you back (which may never happen).

– You submit a proposal (to book a gig, speak at an event, facilitate a workshop, etc.) A week or more has gone by with no response. Do you wait for a call, or do you reach out to the organization/person in charge?

– You meet some really great people at a networking event that have the potential to be a customer, or possibly has the connections and/or resources you need to help take your biz to the next level. Do you contact them within two days after the event, or do all business cards end up in a pile of doom, only to be found months later with no idea who they are or where you met them?

Does any of this sound familiar?

Well, the good news is, there are a couple of simple fixes that can help you raise your follow up game, and make the process easy peasy!

1. To follow up with a potential client, create a simple spreadsheet or document that lists the name of the prospect, date you met/spoke on the phone, a brief note with important details about the consultation/discussion, and a follow up date (don’t be afraid to ask the prospect when is a good time to follow up.)

2. When attending a networking event, don’t simply collect cards. Jot down a short note on the back of those cards that you are interested in following up with, and something that will help you remember who they were (ex: lady with the red hat). Reach out via phone or email within 24-48hrs, as anything after that may cause them to forget you or your conversation. Remember, this person may have collected a ton of biz cards too.

3. Invest in a CRM software. This will allow you to schedule follow up calls or email, keep track of your appointments, and set reminders.

4. Be persistent, but not overbearing. It’s totally ok to reach out to your prospects via different channels. For example, if a phone call goes unanswered, send an email as a back up. Don’t write it off as the person not being interested and avoiding your call.

If you are wondering why you don’t have the amount of clients that you would like, start by taking a deep look at your follow up skills, and decide how you are going to improve upon them.

MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Crys Watson

Crys Watson

Crys “the FABULOUS” Watson is a wardrobe stylist, personal shopper, and founder of the women of color empowerment organization, Noir Unicorn.  The organization gives African-Americans and people of color a platform to discuss societal issues such as colorism, racism, dating, and mental issues.  Her focus is to  promote positivity, unity, self-love, sisterhood, and accountability. As a lover of all things luxury and fabulous, you can also find Crys blogging about her journey as she navigates her way through the fashion industry.

Check out her interview…

Crys Watson

Name: Crys Watson
Location: Los Angeles
Business Name: Noir Unicorn and CTFW Wardrobe Services
Years in Business: Noir Unicorn (2years) & CTFW (4years)

Are you a full or part time business owner?

Part-time

Why did you start your business?

I have always been passionate about fashion and helping women, so I created CTFW Wardrobe Services. Wardrobe styling and fashion blogging is my platform to teach women how to look their best everyday without comparing themselves to others. 2 years later, I created a women of color non-profit organization called Noir Unicorn. My Noir Unicorn team and I produce group discussion social mixers that give African-Americans a platform to discuss issues such as colorism, dating, stereotypes and how we are portrayed in the media. I felt that this was something that we didn’t have in LA and there was a disturbing emotional separation between Black Women. I wanted to create a safe place where women (and men occasionally) of color could vent, share our stories, and encourage each other. We have also just added a monthly After-Work Sisterhood pop up mixer and a Noir Unicorn on a Mission Team that provides feminine care packages to homeless women.

Crys Watson Noir Unicorn

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

The most rewarding aspect of having my own business is knowing that I made a difference in my clients’ and attendees’ lives. I believe that we were put on this earth to be servants, and to know that I am walking in my calling each day is the biggest reward for me.

What are your biggest challenges?

My biggest challenge is dealing with anxiety. I learned that it is very normal to have anxiety when you have your own business and for a long time, I thought that it was only me that dealt with it. I am my biggest critic, and at times, I stand in my own way. Praying, listening to encouraging music, and watching encouraging videos has helped me tremendously.

Crys The Fabulous Watson

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

I will never forget when my wonderful friend and sister in Christ, Haneef R. Jordan told me “What God has for you is for you, and what he has for me is for me. Never compare yourself or be afraid to help others in this business. God has a place for all of us.” I think of that advice whenever I start to compare where I’m at to others.

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

I have 2 awesome girls that are on my Noir Unicorn Team (Aja Williams and Taylor Thibodaux). I work alone with CTFW Wardrobe Services, but occasionally I will enlist an assistant depending on the project.

Crys Watson Noir Unicorn

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

Our goal within the next 5 years for Noir Unicorn is to add more programs and to turn it into a community center where there will be weekly group discussions and life skills classes for all age groups. For CTFW, I will venture into style workshops to teach the everyday woman how to effortlessly look her best daily.

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

Make sure that you are passionate about what you do. If you wouldn’t do it for free, then it is not your calling. People will try to talk you out of what you’re doing or tell you that you’re crazy for being an entrepreneur, but when you’re passionate about what you do, all of the negative talk will roll off of your back.

4 Tips to Stop Chasing Clients, and Start ATTRACTING Them

Stop Chasing Start Attracting

As a marketing strategist and business coach, the number one question that I hear from business owners is: “how do I get more clients?”  My response: you must create an effective marketing strategy that will allow you to stop CHASING clients, and start ATTRACTING them.

There are a lot of components to this, but to quickly break it down, these four steps will allow you to do just that:

Know Your Target Audience

A common mistake that entrepreneurs make is thinking that EVERYONE is their client. While it may be true that anyone can use your product or service, when it comes to marketing your business, you have to get really specific about the type of clients you want to work with. What do they look like? How much money do they make? Where do they live? How do they speak, act, and dress? Take some time to create your ideal client profile. Knowing this information will  help you weed out those who would not be the right fit for your business, and attract those that you can better serve.

Create a Clear Marketing Message

When putting together your marketing message, act as if you are talking to one specific person: your ideal client. Focus on their pain points and the specific results that they will receive as a direct result of working with you (ex: saving money, less stress, etc.)

Be Strategic About Pricing

Pricing plays a big part in whether or not someone decides to use your services, but maybe not in the way that you may think.  Oftentimes, creative entrepreneurs will under price their products/services because they think that is the way to entice clients. But that strategy actually works to the contrary. Strategic pricing is all about perceived value. Make sure that your clients understand the value of what you do. It should be reflected in the description of what they will receive in working with you, as well as the quality of your marketing materials. Know your worth, and highlight why you are worth every penny!

Be Consistent

A key part of marketing is knowing where your ideal clients are hanging out, then determining how to get your marketing message in front of them. However you decide to do that, whether it’s blogging, social media, email marketing, etc., the key is to be consistent with your efforts.   It generally takes a client 5-7 points of contact before they are ready to make a purchasing decision, and they will only buy from those that they know, like, and trust. Being consistent with your efforts will keep you at the top of their mind when it is time to sign on the dotted line.

Merissa Grayson Attorney at Law

Name: Merissa V. Grayson, Esq.
Location: Los Angeles Area
Business Name: “America’s Blended Family Expert“- Lawyer. Author. Speaker. Blended Family Advocate
Years in Business: 5

Are you a full or part time business owner?

full time

Why did you start your business?

I wanted to practice law, but on my own terms. I have 3 children so I wanted flexibility. I also wanted to choose cases that I work on rather than just having them assigned to me. I wanted to always remain in control of what I’m doing, who I’m serving, and how I’m doing it…the only way to achieve this, for me, was entrepreneurship.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

Being able to ensure that I’m only doing what I love. Working solely based on the vision that God gave to me, without any limits, and being able to enjoy my life and family at the same time without asking permission.

What are your biggest challenges?

Learning to delegate tasks that can be delegated. I’m extremely hands on, but oftentimes don’t have the time to be.

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

Done beats perfection. Start where you are and build from there.

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

I have a small team.

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

I plan to expand my law practice to another state (or few).

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

Focus on the “why”…why are you doing what you’re doing. Is it something you love? If not, shift the focus to something else. Don’t choose your work solely based on the amount of money you can make. Regardless of what you do, if you do the work, the money will come. Choose something you love and you’ll never feel like it’s “work”. Imagine living the rest of your life and not having to work.
