MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Allison Volk

Today’s MITM entrepreneur spotlight features Allison Volk, founder of The Blog Babe., a company that makes “consistent content creation a total breeze by writing your blog posts for you in your voice.”  Allison found that working a 9-5 job just didn’t fit her busy lifestyle (she’s also an actress and award-winning playwright).  So, she did what any other smart, savvy future mogul would do: she started her own business to give herself the time freedom and flexibility to live life on her own terms.

Check out her story…

Name: Allison Volk

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Business Name: The Blog Babe

Years in Business: 2

Are you a full or part time business owner?

I am a full-time business owner, and I love it!

Why did you start your business?

I’m an actress in Los Angeles, and I got so frustrated with having hourly jobs that required me to be somewhere at a certain time. That was tough, because as an actress, you really need to be able to move your schedule around with flexibility for auditions and shoots and rehearsals.

When I realized that I could make a living and make my own schedule, starting my business seemed like a no-brainer.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

It’s really empowering to be able to create my life the way I want it to be. I find that I feel more motivated and inspired now that I work for myself, and that the lessons I’ve learned from growing my business and strengthening interpersonal relationships pretty much apply to the rest of life.

Another rewarding aspect is the potential for growth. When I worked hourly, I might get a raise when I’ve been a good employee for a year. When I work for myself, there’s literally no limit to how much money I can make. How many hours do I want to work? How many clients do I want to take on? I get to choose. No one chooses for me. That freedom is… everything.

What are your biggest challenges?

Right now my biggest challenge is managing time. I’m at a point where it’s time for The Blog Babe to grow and there are some pains involved there. It’s really easy to get completely engrossed in work and forget to set aside time for friends and family, but that’s so important!

Another challenge I’m facing at the moment is building solid infrastructure so that the company can grow smoothly. Right now I’m facing questions like, “what’s the best way to bill a customer? How do I remind them to pay an invoice if it’s overdue? How can I most easily automate emails?”

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

Always come from a place of love.

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

Right now I’m building my team, though I’ve been a one-woman show for about 2 years now. It’s amazing how hard it is to take a deep breath and let go of some things! Delegation is so important, but it’s hard!

Allison Volk - The Blog Babe

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

I’m really looking forward to building my writing team and serving more clients. I’ve seen the difference it makes for clients when they can consistently put out smart, relevant articles to their audience; suddenly they start getting more clients, they start earning the trust of their readers, and things start to feel really good.

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

Don’t wait. Just do it now, because no one is going to do it for you!

MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Kristen Wiggins

Disclaimer: While you are reading this post, I will be on the floor furiously hitting 50,ooo situps (you’ll see why in just a sec!)

Today’s MITM entrepreneur spotlight features Kristen Wiggins, founder of Royal Waistbeads, a company that offers handmade, luxury, made-to-order waist beads.  I met Kristin at the June Mogul Meetup, and after just one conversation, I was really impressed by this young lady’s drive and determination.  She made a bold and fearless move to LA from DC to pursue her dreams and quickly found herself immersed in the entrepreneurial scene.  Not only does she design beautiful jewelry, she also documents her fun travel experiences in Peaches, Beaches, and Urbanistas, a travel blog she started with her best friend.

Check out her story…

Are you a full or part time business owner?

Part Time. I’m currently a full-time public relations assistant for a luxury cruise line, and during my time away from the office, I handle all things “side hustle.” I update and maintain Royal Waistbeads’ Etsy and independent website, respond to customer support messages, promote on social media, and touch base with my mom daily about our business.

I’m also spending a lot of time working on my other online based business, Peaches, Beaches, and Urbanistas, a travel blog recently launched by my best friend and I.  We share our experiences in the post-collegiate world as we embrace new cities while reaching our goals. Our aim is to help inspire young women to step out of their comfort zones, make the most of their city, and to travel more. We are both big on travel; we share our travel tips and stories, and also plan on bringing on other guest writers to share their travel tales  as well. Ultimately, I plan for this blog to aid as a segue to both launch an online travel store, and to serve as a platform for a podcast that will highlight young African American world travelers and  entrepreneurs on the rise.  I’m making the most out of my transition to Los Angeles so that I’ll have great content and insight for the blog!

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

I work beside my business partner, who also happens to be my mother! Well, we used to work side by side. Now, we are bicoastal since I moved away from home in Maryland to California.

Why did you start your business?

At first, I started wearing waistbeads because they were a really cute accessory that helped me feel confident in my body. Then, my mother and I started to learn and appreciate their cultural significance, so we created our own waistbeads. It’s a beautiful way to celebrate ancient African innovation, and make a connection with a tradition that our ancestors likely practiced as well. We’ve always been creative and good at crafting, so we tried our hands at jewelry making. The first waistbeads I bought weren’t the best quality, and popped easily. We wanted to make ones that would last, and we wanted to design patterns that would stand out. Our friends and family admired our handwork and encouraged us to make them available publicly online. The more we made, the more we loved it, and we noticed a lot of interest in our items.  We became fully dedicated to sharing our modern spin on this wonderful form of jewelry.

Kristen Wiggins Founder Royal Waistbeads

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

All of the positive customer feedback. It’s truly gratifying when women communicate the sense of empowerment they feel simply by wearing our waistbeads. We’ve had women order custom sets to wear in private for their significant other, complete with gemstones representing love and sensuality. One might tell us how much her husband loved them. We also have a lot of women ordering waistbeads for their vacation. We love to  hear how excited they are to show them off with their swimsuits at the beach. Probably the most rewarding feedback we receive has to do with our customer service and the quality of our work. We put A LOT of effort into those aspects, so it feels great when customers take the time out to mention that. It’s an invaluable feeling to know that you have the ability to produce something special, and that your vision is well received.

What are your biggest challenges?

It is very time consuming to produce custom, handmade-to-order items. It’s definitely difficult to scale, as we’d have to compromise on the availability of styles and customization — which is what we pride Royal Waistbeads on.   So right now, I’d say the biggest challenge is figuring out how to expand and open a second, scalable business, while still maintaining the growth of Royal Waistbeads and completing orders.

Kristen Wiggins Founder Royal Waistbeads

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

I’ve heard countless beneficial  gems of advice, but here’s a chunk of what I think is most important:

  • Find a way to make your passion profitable. You’ll be working hard day in and day out; you’ll get burnt out by doing something you don’t enjoy.

  • You don’t have to be perfect to START.

  • Create value and  focus on your audience in everything you do.

  • Make sure you have a unique approach!

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

Going beyond just Royal Waistbeads, my true vision is for waisbteads to become a staple piece of jewelry on girls and women across the world. It is still a relatively little known about practice, but I believe one day it will be just as common as wearing bracelets and necklaces. When people here in America, or even as far as Australia and Japan, see waistbeads, they will see a confident woman, and they will know the story behind this beautiful African tradition.

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

While you are building your brand, make sure you accomplish something every single day that helps you reach your goals. Continuously seek opportunities to better yourself as an entrepreneur — watch Youtube videos, read business blogs, listen to Podcasts, and take lots of notes. Prioritize. Never stop building, and never stop learning.

MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Rebekka Lien

Today’s Mogul in the Making Entrepreneur Spotlight features Rebekka Lien, a multi-talented creative entrepreneur and businesswoman.  Rebekka is the epitome of what I like to call a “hustle-preneur”, combining her many skills, talents, and passions to create a lifestyle of freedom and self-fulfillment.  Not only is she a real estate professional, but she also teaches yoga, hosts creative workshops and speaks at seminars, events, etc., to teach other entrepreneurs to survive and thrive by working for themselves.

Check out her story to find out how she was able to quit her job and create several businesses that allow her to live life on her own terms while inspiring others along the way!

Entrepreneur Rebekka Lien

Name: Rebekka Lien

Location: Los Angeles

Business Name: Rebekka Lien – Creative Entrepreneur, Speaker &

Spokesperson, Real Estate Professional at Real Estate Heaven

Years in Business: 10

Are you a full or part time business owner?

Full time business owner

Why did you start your business?

I was selling toys at the age of 8 and have always been an entrepreneur. It was natural for me to want to start my own business. I started selling clothes and jewelry on Ebay and expanded to selling at shows while working full time. I decided to quit my job in 2011. Soon enough, I expanded my mind and thought “how can I make more money in less time?” I started coaching people one on one, then in groups, then I spoke at bigger events. My passion projects are numerous! I teach Yoga and Meditation weekly, write a monthly column for West Valley Journal and am taking acting classes! Real estate was a natural progression because I saw the opportunity to help people achieve their dreams and create wealth while doing it. My goal is to build multiple businesses and help others be the highest expression of who they are. The beautiful thing about being human is that we are multi-dimensional, so we don’t have to just focus on “one thing.” DO WHAT MAKES YOU COME ALIVE!

Entrepreneur Rebekka Lien

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

Having your own business is not always easy, but the biggest reward is knowing that YOU built it! I look back at how I survived not having a full time job and I am truly amazed at how far I have come. Most people think about their fears of not being able to survive- that is low energy and short term thinking.  I think BIG and LONG TERM. Where do I see myself in 5-10 years? Every year, my projects, talents, business expands because I have sown hours of tactful work and creativity into it! Freedom is what I seek and I remind myself to be free everyday!

What are your biggest challenges?

My biggest challenges is working with people. Don’t get me wrong, I love people, but NOT everyone is easy to work with. You can love people, but you don’t always like them. I personally clash with personalities that try to control me. Since I am such an independent-minded thinker, I have to humble my ego and ask myself “is it worth it?” I’m grateful that I know how to set boundaries with personality types that try to guilt trip or control me. In business.  People will manipulate you to get what they want, but you have to stand your ground and not let them undermine your values, morals, and goals!

Entrepreneur Rebekka Lien

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

Don’t give up. Most people give up when they are almost there. What is the difference between people who are excellent and people who are just okay? The people who are good don’t push themselves to the very end because it is too hard, it is a mental game! People who are excellent at what they do battle the doubts and push forward even when all odds are against them!

Do you have a team or are you a one woman show?

My brand is MY NAME but I have people that I outsource work to. I have graphic designers, advisors, and assistants that I delegate work to. My goal is to outsource everything I don’t have to do. For example, I hope to speak at events, write books, close deals and delegate all administrative work to my assistants.

Entrepreneur Rebekka Lien

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

In 5 years I will be 31! I hope to be traveling around the world speaking at conferences, have books published and own multiple self-running businesses! My name will be INTERNATIONALLY known. I will be a sought after creative businesswoman and speaker. I also hope to have a partner who can do some grunt work for me (JK, not).

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

DON’T WAIT FOR LIFE TO BE PERFECT TO START! I have seen too many people wait until they are too old, too tired, too settled, too scared to make a change in their life or start a business in their life! LIFE will NEVER be perfect, something will always be amiss. You have to JUMP off the cliff as soon as possible or the fear-mongers will grab you by the shoulders and force you to compromise and live a boring life with the rest of the world! You don’t know how HIGH you can fly if you stay grounded in stability. Don’t be that bird who is too scared to fly their whole life. Soar high because THAT is your destiny!

On Saturday August 2, 2014, Rebekka is hosting a live workshop for aspiring entrepreneurs called  “How to Make Money Doing What You Love”.  Join her to learn to become the highest expression of who you are meant to be and gain practical strategies and tips to start making money while using all the talents and skills you have! REGISTER TODAY at http://lovemoneywork.eventbrite.com

My Weight Loss Journey + Cilantro Lime Tilapia Tacos Recipe

In April of last year, I set out on a healthier lifestyle journey.  My weight was out of control, I felt sluggish all the time, and was overall unhappy about my appearance.  I started working out, and I wouldn’t say I started “dieting”, but I definitely changed my eating habits.  I was so proud of myself!  For the first time ever, I began to enjoy my exercise routine and actually stuck with it. I started preparing to run my first 5k and was well on my way to reaching my first weight loss goal.

Nikola at the Culver City Stairs

By September, I was down 3olbs…only 10 pound shy of my goal.  Unfortunately, I was in a really bad car accident that left me with a broken talus (the major bone in your ankle).  I had to wear this crazy looking metal contraption for 3 long months, graduated to a big, bulky boot, and needed to walk with a walker.  I was left with a broken spirit and, needless to say, my weight loss  goals came to a screeching halt because I could no longer walk nor prepare my own healthy meals.  Not to mention, the doctors had little hope that I would ever be able to run again.

Nikola wearing Metal Asphyx

Fast forward to May 2014.  I had slowly made progress and was able to move around a lot better. I was determined to get  back in shape!  I still had a lot of physical limitations that didn’t allow me to work out the way that I used to, so I decided that at the very least I could get back into the groove of preparing healthier meals  again.

I set out to find some really GOOD, healthy recipes, because I believe that healthy doesn’t have to be boring and there would be no eating like a bird over here! Of course I started my search on my number one go-to resource site: Pinterest!  I found a ton of fun and delicious looking recipes that I wanted to try.  My very first were these Cilantro Lime Tilapia Tacos. OMG, were these a hit!  They were bursting with flavor…yum!

Here is the recipe.

I’ve been posting pictures of my “healthy doesn’t have to be boring” recipes on Facebook, and so many people have reached out to me to share them, so I’ve decided to make this a weekly feature on the blog.  Why? Because I feel that your health and wellness is an integral part of being a mogul  in the making.  I hope that my weight loss journey, even with all of the obstacles and curveballs thrown my way, will inspire others to make their health a priority and embark on a journey of their own.
