2016 Year In Review: My Year of GROWTH

As I sit here typing on this eve of the New Year, I am thinking about how absolutely giddy and excited I am about all that is to come in 2017! 2016 seemed to be a pretty rough year for many people. All throughout my social media feeds, I've seen countless posts with anticipation to end such a dreary year, and with hope that this upcoming year will be much better. I am a generally happy, bubbly, and optimistic person (you kinda have to be when it is your job to motivate and speak life into others), but I must say that I experienced several challenges and personal setbacks this year that has me running to the finish line, and ready to leap into a year full of happiness, fulfillment, and abundance. In fact, I have declared that my word for 2017 will be LEAP. Last year, I wrote my very first "Year in Review" post, and it was very therapeutic in a way. It was great to reflect back on all of the positive things that happened in my life as opposed to dwelling on the things that didn't quite go as planned, or that downright sucked. So, here goes...I bring to you my highlight reel of 2016:

Doubled My Number of Speaking Gigs

I achieved one of my top goals for the year, which was to double the number of speaking engagements that I had in 2015. Mission accomplished! Speaking and teaching are undoubtedly my two most favorite aspects of my business, so not only do I get to do what I absolutely LOVE, but I truly feel like I'm walking in my purpose every time I step on a stage or in front of a room. In 2017, I hope to keep it going by doubling my numbers again...and also to add INTERNATIONAL SPEAKER to my resume (Yes, I'm claiming it in advance!) Just a few of the other workshops and events I had the honor of speaking at this year. In 2017 I will be better about getting pics of my speaking gigs.

Launched My First Mini Course

This was a major accomplishment for two reasons: 1) I had been sitting on this idea for over a year, and finally took the time to make it a reality. I launched it as a mini course first, as a sort of test run leading up to the launch of my signature course, of the same name, that will be launching this year. 2.) I had absolutely NO knowledge of how to go about getting this done, but I didn't let that stop me. I did the research. I implemented what I learned, and I DID IT. It was a lesson in not waiting until things are perfect, but instead, just getting started and improving as you go. I got a lot of really good feedback, and am so excited to launch the full course, in addition to several other courses, this year. Stay tuned! Mogul Marketing Bootcamp Mini Course Launch

Hosted My First Signature Event: Say YES to Your Dreams

Another "just do it" moment. I was going to wait until the new year to host this event, jut because I felt that January was the time when most people go into vision board/planning/goal setting mode. But I realized that mid-year was the perfect time to do an assessment of where you are in the pursuit of your goals and to get a little motivation to keep going. I'm happy to say that the event was a success! Each and every panel speaker was AMAZING and the women in attendance walked away with a lot of valuable information and the confidence to boldly walk in the direction of their dreams. Planning is already underway for the next event, which will be a little different, but equally, if not more, wonderful than the first! Say YES to Your Dreams Vision Board Event

Launched Moguls Give Back

I literally started Moguls Give Back on a whim! I wanted to find a way to give back to my community, and I figured what better way than to start my own initiative?! The goal was for my fellow entrepreneurs to band together and do our part to service our communities.  I reached out to my tribe via social media and was overwhelmed and thrilled at the amount of support it received. In the summer, we hosted a School Supply Drive where we were able to bless almost 100 students with all of the supplies they needed to have a successful school year. In November, we hosted a turkey giveaway, where we were able to bless 6 wonderful families. This could not have been done without the generous donations we received. A special thank you goes out to Kenya Kirkland of Shop 1323 for letting us host the first event at her boutique, and Shelley Mechette of The PowHERful Woman for being an official partner for the second event. In 2017, I hope to take these efforts to the next level by officially forming a non-profit 501(c)3, and hosting more charity events throughout the year. Weight Loss Journey

My weight has been a big struggle for me for YEARS. Prior to being involved in the car accident that left me unable to walk for nearly 6 months, I was finally able to get a hold of it by dropping nearly 40lbs. Unfortunately, after that horrible ordeal, I just could not seem to get it back under control. The main reason was because I had on-going ankle issues that prevented me from working out the way that I would have liked to. This year, however, I decided not to let that hold be back anymore. I invested in a personal trainer (shout out to Lance Branchman) and finally started working toward my health and fitness goals again. In just the last two months of the year, I've been able to see a difference in, not only the way I look, but more importantly, the way I feel. Although the scale has only just recently started to be my friend (I wasn't seeing much of a difference in my weight), I experienced so many non-scale victories, such as my clothes fitting better, loss of inches and a change in my body composition, better eating habits, and overall feeling healthier and stronger (I no longer feel like I am going to pass out after each workout lol). Also, its given me increased confidence that is showing up in other aspects of my life, and business. Therefore, I will continue training into the new year, and who knows...I may even run a marathon or two before the year is up!

Made Memories and Enjoyed Life

This was probably my most important fete of 2016...MAKING the time to experience life and make memories with those that I love. There is nothing like a near fatal experience to make you realize just how precious life is. Over the last few years, I've had this feeling that I've been merely existing, as opposed to living. This year, I can truly say I took my first steps to changing that by getting out there and making memories with my loved ones. After all, one of the main reasons I started my business was to have full freedom and control of my time, and because I wanted to live life on my own terms. In 2016, I finally figured out exactly what that looks like...

Took a couple of Kid-cations (vacays with the kiddos)...a road trip to San Diego and to visit family in Texas...

Nikola Ahaiwe - Time Freedom

Spent a lot of quality time going on family outings and experiencing fun, new places. Nikola Ahaiwe - Time Freedom

Nikola Ahaiwe - Time Freedom Nikola Ahaiwe - Time Freedom

...was even able to get in a few Mom-cations (without the kiddos) to Catalina Island and Washington DC.

Nikola Ahaiwe - Time Freedom Nikola Ahaiwe - Time Freedom

...and I made a conscious effort to get out more and support friends, family, and fellow business owners at their events, celebrating life occasions, and on their creative endeavors.

Nikola Ahaiwe - Time Freedom

I know a lot of people that experienced quite a few challenges and hardships in 2016 (myself included), but it's so important to take a step back and remind yourself of all of the things that went well, all of the things you're grateful for, and the many blessings that you have in spite of everything else.

Now that you've had a glimpse into my year, I want to know:

What has 2016 taught you

{SPEAKING} Women of Power LA Mixer

Women of Power LA MixerFrom Left: Actress/Producer/Choreographer Jivanta Roberts, Financial Coach/Author Dr. Dominique Reese, Philanthropist/Entrepreneur Uche Umeagukwu, Producer/Owner of The Barboza Method Stefanie Barboza, Business Coach/Author/Motivational Speaker Nikola Ahaiwe This past weekend, I had the pleasure of speaking at the Maximize Your Potential: Women of Power LA Mixer.  It was truly an honor to speak alongside an amazing panel of beautiful, talented, successful, and inspiring women! During my presentation, I discussed the importance of pursuing your passion and walking in your purpose.  I also had the opportunity to share my story of being laid off from my corporate job, being involved in a near fatal car accident that left me with a shattered ankle and 6 months of being unable to walk, to finally realizing my calling as a business coach and motivational speaker.
When I leave this world, I want to be one hundred percent used up...totally empty. I don't want to have a drop of talent, knowledge, resources, gifts, etc. that I did not share with the world...and neither should you. So START NOW. That business you want to start, start it. That book you want to write, write it. Whatever it is that you have been wanting to do, there is no better time than the present. It's time to start walking in your purpose.
Women of Power LA Mixer Speaking is absolutely my favorite part of my business.  I love sharing my story, because it is truly one of perseverance, resilience, and a will to succeed despite any obstacle that may be thrown your way. As I stated during the opening of my talk "If you get nothing else from hearing my story, I want this to be your takeaway: when God tells you to move (on your purpose), you MOVE."

So, what are you waiting for? Do you feel that what you are doing right now is what you have been called to do? If not, what do you need to do in order for you to start walking in your purpose?

Kenya Kirkland1 Name: Kenya Kirkland Location: Los Angeles Business Name: Kenya Kirkland, Thee Style Icon Years in Business: 3

Are you a full or part time business owner? I’m a full time business owner. Why did you start your business? I started my business because I’m passionate about inspiring women to discover their purpose and launch businesses that are flowing directly from it. In working with women on a daily basis in my boutique, Shop 1323, I have the opportunity to use style to motivate, inspire, and encourage. I decided to do more of it!

Kenya Kirkland - The Style Icon

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business? The most rewarding aspect of owning my own business is the freedom I have to be a mother. I don’t have to ask for time off. My kids can go to work with me. There’s no ceiling on how much money I can make. I love that the possibilities are endless. And lastly, there is no one to control my creativity. I create what I want, when I want. What are your biggest challenges? The biggest challenge of being self employed is that there is no regular pay check to depend on, no 401k, no paid sick days, no paid vacation. You eat what you hunt. It can be both a blessing and a curse.

Kenya Kirkland - The Style Icon

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received? The best business advice I’ve ever received was to create or offer a product that my current target market desires versus selling a product and being forced to find a market. There are people around you that need and /or want something. What is it? Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show? I have an amazing team. For years, I was a one woman show. I recently activated Faith for a team. I prayed about it and sewed a seed and my team was created! I’m so thankful to have help. It’s such a blessing to witness my vision come to life.

Kenya Kirkland - The Style Icon

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years? In 5 years, I’ll be traveling the world speaking, hosting workshops and mentoring world changers to launch amazing businesses globally. What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making? My advice to other Moguls in the Making is to have Faith and Trust in God. Every setback is a set up, so don’t stop. Just keep pushing through! Surround yourself with people who are in alignment with your vision...and don’t compromise. Photo Credit: Samuel Whitworth

MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Jennifer Pink

Today's MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight features Ms. Jennifer Pink.  Known as the Single Mom Sage, Jennifer is a mompreneur dedicated to providing supportive resources and information to empower and strengthen single moms in their journey of womanhood and motherhood.  By the age of 25, she was a single mother of 2, embarking on a divorce, jobless, on welfare, and homeless.  When she was ready to give up and succumb to surrounding pressures, she was blessed with another chance! She was given a job, a home, and shortly after that another baby. Her life received a fresh jump start! Jennifer turned her struggles into opportunities and today, she is living confidently in her calling. She is the voice of single mothers instilling hope and help into their community!  Check out her story...

Ms Jennifer PINK - The Single Mom Sage Name: Ms. Jennifer Pink Location: Los Angeles, CA Business Name: Ms. Jennifer Pink, Single Mom Sage Years in Business: 8 years with The P.I.N.K. Foundation 1.5 as Ms. Jennifer Pink, Single Mom Sage

Are you a full or part time business owner? I still work a full time job, and run my businesses full time as well. Why did you start your business? I originally started my non-profit because I was homeless, jobless and about to go through a divorce with 2 kids and couldn’t find a job. So a friend pushed me to use my skills to start my own business. I started The Persistent Investigation for Never-Ending Knowledge (P.I.N.K.) Foundation. The original mission was to bring together like-minded women in hopes of supporting one another in life. After I got pregnant with my 3rd (and last) child, I felt like I couldn’t continue being an entrepreneur, work, and be a mother. Well, the network I built through P.I.N.K. wasn’t hearing it and one woman in particular, Jasmine Powers, pushed me to do something, especially blogging. I was resistant but finally gave in and set out to create my blog. The entrepreneur in me wouldn’t allow me not to create a brand for the blog. I knew I was going to call it The J’s Sandbox (my children and I all have names that start with J), and it was going to be about my journey of raising them in the sandbox of life. I asked one of my network groups for advice on what to call myself; everybody says mompreneur and such, so I wanted to be original. One of my mentors, Denise J. Hart, asked a couple of questions about who I really am and what the blog was about and its purpose, and gave me the name Single Mom Sage. It was like she opened my eyes to the purpose of my life. Within minutes after her crowning me with that title I had created Ms. Jennifer Pink, Single Mom Sage. I now know how I can turn my pain, struggles, and victories into a life saving message for women just like me. If I can help one single mom not go round and round in the circle of survival, then it is all worth it.

Ms. Jennifer PINK - The Single Mom Sage

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business? Watching the spark it has created in my daughter. My daughter is the oldest, and watching me create my business and brand has sparked her to go after her dreams on her own terms. From birth I have surrounded her with images from my OBGYN, to her pediatrician, dentist and teachers. I wanted to instill in her that she can be anything. I never thought that I would be the thing she wanted to become. I can’t wait to watch what it manifests in my boys lives. What are your biggest challenges? My blood family. I come from a "we don’t tell our dirt in the streets" family. We smile, walk with poise and grace, and serve others even when our house is burning down right behind us. So for them, I’ve made way too many mistakes, and standing up in front of anyone and telling them I am a single mom of 3 is terrifying to them. They can’t stand that I speak my mind on social media or that I tell my business at all. They also can’t fathom how I could make money or support my family doing what I do. They would much rather I just work at my good job and keep climbing the ladder. Winning $10k at the Innovation Summit was the first time I heard my mom tell me she was proud of me for what I was doing in my business. Not to mention the family members who don’t like my stance because it goes against where they are in their lives so much, so they throw my past in my face in order to discredit me.

Ms. Jennifer PINK - The Single Mom Sage

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received? Just do you. When you create a business the way “they” say you should or to appease someone else, it isn’t authentic. Although you may make money, you won’t have the freedom and true success that comes from doing it your way and being you. Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show? I have a small team. I have a graphic artist, an editor, and a few village members who pitch in or allow me to bounce ideas off of them.

Ms. Jennifer PINK - The Single Mom Sage

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years? This is scary to say but in the next 5 years I see myself traveling across the world empowering single moms and bringing this community together. I see my kids thriving in the creation of their boutique and the J Crew being a household name. What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making? Don’t dim your light for anyone. Not your family, your friends or the world. You were meant to shine so please let your light shine in its own unique way. When we shine the way we were meant to shine, we THRIVE. When PASSION Meets PURPOSE

Nikola Ahaiwe Blogging Workshop
Facilitating the "Build Your Business Through Blogging" workshop. Don't mind the crazy facial expression and hand gesture...I was really into it!
Excuse me while I get a little transparent for a moment... WHEN YOUR PASSION BECOMES YOUR PURPOSE If you would have told me in the early part of last year that I would be conquering my fear of public speaking by teaching live workshops/classes, I probably wouldn't have believed you. Yes, it was a part of my vision, but there was still a tiny little voice in my head telling me that it couldn't be done. Aside from my public speaking phobia, I was still battling self-esteem issues stemming from the way I walked after I was in a pretty bad car accident. But you know what, I pressed forward anyway. I tuned out that nagging little voice (it's a skill you learn once you become a mom), and I simply went for it. I say all of this to say, when you truly want something, there is absolutely NOTHING that can stop you. You have to kick fear in the face and tell your self-doubt that it has no place in your life. It has always been my passion to help others, but over the last few months, that passion has transformed into my PURPOSE. I know that I was brought here to serve others, and I am ready to accept that mission. I declare that I will use my gifts to inspire, motivate, encourage, and uplift others. Below are a couple more pictures of me facilitating the "Build Your Business Through Blogging" workshop a few nights ago: Nikola Ahaiwe Blogging Workshop Nikola Ahaiwe Blogging Workshop

MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Tiffany Lanier

Hey there, future moguls! I'm so excited to bring back the Mogul in the Making Entrepreneur spotlight series.  We took a little hiatus, with the craziness of the holidays, but I have a great lineup of super talented, inspiring, and passionate entrepreneurs to showcase over the next several weeks!

First up is Tiffany Lanier, of LiveWithTiffany.com.  Tiffany helps entrepreneurs fall in love with what they do, from wherever they want to do it by creating, packaging, and marketing their brilliance online.  Read on to find out how she fell into entrepreneurship "on accident" and how she plans to take her business worldwide!

Name: Tiffany Lanier Location: Denver Business Name: Live with Tiffany Years in Business: Almost 3

Tiffany Lanier, founder of Live With Tiffany Are you a full or part time business owner? Full-time Why did you start your business? Well…I started my business on accident. I was planning to quit my first job out of college at a Startup as a Social Media Marketer to go to Costa Rica to “find myself.” I knew I wanted to do something on my own but I didn’t know what at the time. But I did know that working 9-5 wasn’t for me. Right before I bought a one way ticket to Costa Rica I was offered another marketing job at a local Marketing and Advertising firm but quickly discovered it was not for me.  I knew I didn’t want a job but at the same time saw an opportunity to learn from other marketers to increase my skill-set. But after only 2 weeks of working there the boss came in screaming at everyone for what reason I’m not sure. I was not a fan. Later that night I wrote him an email simply explaining that I wasn’t please with his level of disrespect and because of it, I could no longer work FOR him but I would consider working with him and the company, if he’d like to contract me.  To my surprise he said, “ok.” They became my first client and I started freelance marketing business. Around the same time, I started a Women’s event business. And after about 20 months of mistakes and not being fulfilled later, I decided to start my Online Coaching Business, where I provide Business and Online Marketing coaching and strategy for entrepreneurs looking to build their personal brands online. I really wanted freedom to do my business anywhere I desired to be, as well as create a business that was scalable, allowing me to have several business models under one umbrella brand. Tiffany Lanier, founder of Live With Tiffany What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business? Waking up every day knowing that I’m in control and that I literally create my outcomes. What are your biggest challenges? Some of the biggest challenges I’ve faced being entrepreneur was not knowing what I didn’t know and not having the capital to make bigger moves faster. I think those are two challenges most entrepreneurs face, especially in the beginning. I strongly believe it’s important to invest in help and support before you think you need it. Hiring a coach or a strategist, even if it’s for a one-time session, can give you more clarity than 6 months to a year of fumbling around. What is the best business advice you’ve ever received? “Charge what you’re worth.” You know why that’s so important? Because if you don’t you start to resent your clients and yourself which doesn’t allow you to love your business. Tiffany Lanier, founder of Live With Tiffany Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show? For the most part I’m a one-woman show, but I do outsource certain task here and there. Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years? Wow 5 years. My long term is 6-12 months lol. I see myself Speaking world-wide, continuing to coach and really expanding on retreats and Live events. What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making? Start where you are. There will never be a great star aligned time to start your business. Take what you have and what you know and just take action. It’s better to build a little every day than to put it off for years and never start at all.

Name: Katie Bressack

Location: Manhattan Beach

Business Name: Balanced Beings

Years in Business: 4 This November!

Are you a full or part time business owner?

Full time.

Why did you start your business?

I was a 28 year old living in New York city with a thriving career and active social network of great family and friends. I was happy, healthy and succeeding in all areas of life, that is until I found myself with a sinus infection. This was not just your run-of-the-mill sinus infection that can be treated with a cycle of antibiotics, but one that lasted for an entire year. Based on my happiness, continual hustle and bustle of city life, and career success at the time, I blindly assumed I was “being healthy” and kind to my body. What I failed to realize was that this perfectionist, type-A city woman was so full of stress, adrenaline and quick–fix medicine that I was unable to recognize that the lifestyle I was living was actually doing more harm than good and would be extremely detrimental and unsustainable in the long-run if I did not make some changes and fast! The first step on my journey to wellness was finding a holistic doctor to guide me through the process. I was fortunate enough to find a doctor that changed my life and I will be forever indebted to her. Her advice ironically enough, was extremely simple: Stop taking medicine that was just masking the symptoms and not actually fixing the problem and more importantly, relax. She gave me a prescription for a neti-pot, probiotics, yoga and meditation. While normally this stubborn New Yorker would have laughed at the idea of relaxation and natural remedies as a solution, I was so desperate to get over this year-long infection that I was willing to try anything. And so with this appointment, I had my “aha” moment with my health. From that day forward I vowed that life is too short to live that type of stress-induced lifestyle and I would never allow myself to get back to that place again. I started incorporating health and wellness into my life through meditation, yoga and an improved healthy diet amongst many other elements. Since then I’ve changed from an illness prone stress case into the woman I am today, and haven’t had a sinus infection for seven years. This experience entirely changed the trajectory of my life. I realized that in order to practice health and wellness regularly, I needed to permanently put myself in an environment that fostered this lifestyle. I decided to quit my high-stress job in New York, move to the South Bay, become a yoga teacher, return to school to become a Holistic Health Coach and launch my own health and wellness consulting business. It took me years to figure out the best way to take care of myself and my health and it is from my own experience that I draw inspiration to help women feel healthier and more joyful in their lives. What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

What continues to inspire me is watching my clients transform their lives right in front of my eyes, one day at a time. It is the most incredible feeling to see all of the women I have supported feel so proud and comfortable in their bodies and dedicated to maintaining the new healthy and active lifestyle I’ve worked with them to create. I’ve seen so many of the women complete the program with so much increased confidence that they are willing to take risks they would never have considered before. For example, upon completion of her program, one recent client was so motivated to take life by the horns and not let another minute pass her by, decided to move to London to follow her dreams! It is women like this that drive me to run my business.

What are your biggest challenges?

My biggest challenge is managing all of my ideas! I get inspired so often when I am working with clients or just in a yoga class that I want to implement things right away, but that often gets in the way of growing my business with focus. What I have done is create a document where I can write down all of my ideas and when I have time I look at the list and see what would be the next best step.

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

That being busy doesn’t mean your business is growing. I often get stuck in the small every day details but what is most important is the big picture. If I sit at my desk every day writing blogs but I am not meeting new people, then my business might not grow.

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

One woman show. Katie Bressack - Health and Wellness Expert

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

My online community Thrive In Your Body is flourishing and I have woman all of the world being a part of this online community where we have group calls and an online platform where we will all be supporting one another with our health and wellness journey. I will be holding retreats and my book Thrive In Your Body will be a New York Times Bestseller!

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

To always listen to your gut and keep moving forward. Set-backs and challenges are important and we learn so much from them and never ever give up!
