MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Crys Watson

Crys Watson Crys "the FABULOUS" Watson is a wardrobe stylist, personal shopper, and founder of the women of color empowerment organization, Noir Unicorn.  The organization gives African-Americans and people of color a platform to discuss societal issues such as colorism, racism, dating, and mental issues.  Her focus is to  promote positivity, unity, self-love, sisterhood, and accountability. As a lover of all things luxury and fabulous, you can also find Crys blogging about her journey as she navigates her way through the fashion industry. Check out her interview...

Crys Watson

Name: Crys Watson Location: Los Angeles Business Name: Noir Unicorn and CTFW Wardrobe Services Years in Business: Noir Unicorn (2years) & CTFW (4years)

Are you a full or part time business owner? Part-time Why did you start your business? I have always been passionate about fashion and helping women, so I created CTFW Wardrobe Services. Wardrobe styling and fashion blogging is my platform to teach women how to look their best everyday without comparing themselves to others. 2 years later, I created a women of color non-profit organization called Noir Unicorn. My Noir Unicorn team and I produce group discussion social mixers that give African-Americans a platform to discuss issues such as colorism, dating, stereotypes and how we are portrayed in the media. I felt that this was something that we didn’t have in LA and there was a disturbing emotional separation between Black Women. I wanted to create a safe place where women (and men occasionally) of color could vent, share our stories, and encourage each other. We have also just added a monthly After-Work Sisterhood pop up mixer and a Noir Unicorn on a Mission Team that provides feminine care packages to homeless women. Crys Watson Noir Unicorn What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business? The most rewarding aspect of having my own business is knowing that I made a difference in my clients’ and attendees’ lives. I believe that we were put on this earth to be servants, and to know that I am walking in my calling each day is the biggest reward for me. What are your biggest challenges? My biggest challenge is dealing with anxiety. I learned that it is very normal to have anxiety when you have your own business and for a long time, I thought that it was only me that dealt with it. I am my biggest critic, and at times, I stand in my own way. Praying, listening to encouraging music, and watching encouraging videos has helped me tremendously. Crys The Fabulous Watson What is the best business advice you’ve ever received? I will never forget when my wonderful friend and sister in Christ, Haneef R. Jordan told me “What God has for you is for you, and what he has for me is for me. Never compare yourself or be afraid to help others in this business. God has a place for all of us.” I think of that advice whenever I start to compare where I’m at to others. Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show? I have 2 awesome girls that are on my Noir Unicorn Team (Aja Williams and Taylor Thibodaux). I work alone with CTFW Wardrobe Services, but occasionally I will enlist an assistant depending on the project.

Crys Watson Noir Unicorn

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years? Our goal within the next 5 years for Noir Unicorn is to add more programs and to turn it into a community center where there will be weekly group discussions and life skills classes for all age groups. For CTFW, I will venture into style workshops to teach the everyday woman how to effortlessly look her best daily. What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making? Make sure that you are passionate about what you do. If you wouldn’t do it for free, then it is not your calling. People will try to talk you out of what you’re doing or tell you that you’re crazy for being an entrepreneur, but when you’re passionate about what you do, all of the negative talk will roll off of your back. Merissa Grayson Attorney at Law

Name: Merissa V. Grayson, Esq. Location: Los Angeles Area Business Name: "America's Blended Family Expert"- Lawyer. Author. Speaker. Blended Family Advocate Years in Business: 5

Are you a full or part time business owner? full time Why did you start your business? I wanted to practice law, but on my own terms. I have 3 children so I wanted flexibility. I also wanted to choose cases that I work on rather than just having them assigned to me. I wanted to always remain in control of what I'm doing, who I'm serving, and how I'm doing it...the only way to achieve this, for me, was entrepreneurship. Merissa Grayson Attorney at Law What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business? Being able to ensure that I'm only doing what I love. Working solely based on the vision that God gave to me, without any limits, and being able to enjoy my life and family at the same time without asking permission. What are your biggest challenges? Learning to delegate tasks that can be delegated. I'm extremely hands on, but oftentimes don't have the time to be. Merissa Grayson Attorney at Law What is the best business advice you’ve ever received? Done beats perfection. Start where you are and build from there. Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show? I have a small team. Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years? I plan to expand my law practice to another state (or few). Merissa Grayson Attorney at Law What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making? Focus on the "why"...why are you doing what you're doing. Is it something you love? If not, shift the focus to something else. Don't choose your work solely based on the amount of money you can make. Regardless of what you do, if you do the work, the money will come. Choose something you love and you'll never feel like it's "work". Imagine living the rest of your life and not having to work. MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Robin Ayers

Today’s Mogul in the Making Entrepreneur Spotlight features Robin Ayers, founder of Itsrobinayers.com. As a host and entertainment correspondent, she has been blessed to cover some of the hottest interviews with celebrities such as Brandy, MC Lyte, and Russell Simmons to name just a few. Robin is also a motivational speaker. If you follow her on social media, you will be a witness to some of the jewels and nuggets of wisdom that she drops daily. As a wife, mom, and businesswoman, Robin is the epitome of a woman that can juggle it all.

Check out her interview…

Robin Ayers Name: Robin Ayers Location: Los Angeles, CA Business Name: Its Robin Ayers Years in Business: 4-5

Are you a full or part time business owner? Full time Why did you start your business? I began interviewing people who have a story to tell. There aren’t a lot of “feel good” stories that we hear about anymore. Many celebrities are well known in the blogs for gossip/slanderous stories, but I wanted to share stories of motivation and inspiration that people needed to hear. Robin Ayers What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business? Sharing inspirational stories has also allowed me to be a vessel of hope and inspiration for others. People who get full when I speak my words of wisdom reward me. In addition to that, knowing that my two daughters are looking at me as a role model for starting my own business and running it with class and dignity. Nothing beats that feeling! What are your biggest challenges? I’ve been a one-woman-show, with the help of some great people along the way. The biggest challenge is learning how to delegate to people who have the same drive, vision, and passion for “goodness” that I do. So often, people are, unfortunately, driven by the amount of money or benefit that they’ll receive if they collaborate with you or work with you on a project. Finances don’t drive me, passion does. So finding people who think the same way has been a challenge thus far.

Robin Ayers

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received? “Follow your dreams, the money will come.” I don’t remember who told me that but I’ve actually heard that many times and I believe it to be true. Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show? It’s funny that I answered this as one of my biggest challenges. I won’t be a one-woman show for too much longer though. I can feel it! Robin Ayers Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years? I’m confident that I will be hosting a show in the next 5 years, whether on a network or web based program. My vision is to be the “go to” for positive news for, not only celebrities, but everyday achievers as well. What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making? Put your own self on the map. Grind so hard that people will begin to take note of you and pay you attention. The things you work hard for, no one can take away from you. Latonya Washington - LW Special Events What is the best business advice you’ve ever received? I’ve received a lot of advice from great people. Kenya Kirkland - The Style Icon

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business? The most rewarding aspect of owning my own business is the freedom I have to be a mother. I don’t have to ask for time off. My kids can go to work with me. There’s no ceiling on how much money I can make. I love that the possibilities are endless. And lastly, there is no one to control my creativity. I create what I want, when I want. What are your biggest challenges? The biggest challenge of being self employed is that there is no regular pay check to depend on, no 401k, no paid sick days, no paid vacation. You eat what you hunt. It can be both a blessing and a curse.

Kenya Kirkland - The Style Icon

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received? The best business advice I’ve ever received was to create or offer a product that my current target market desires versus selling a product and being forced to find a market. There are people around you that need and /or want something. What is it? Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show? I have an amazing team. For years, I was a one woman show. I recently activated Faith for a team. I prayed about it and sewed a seed and my team was created! I’m so thankful to have help. It’s such a blessing to witness my vision come to life.

Her therapeutic approach is holistic, eclectic, and tailored to her clients' needs to make sure each person is cared for biologically, emotionally, and spiritually. Check out her interview...

Kiaundra Jackson - KW Essential Services Name: Kiaundra Jackson Location: Los Angeles, CA Business Name: KW Essential Services Years in Business: 6 months

Are you a full or part time business owner? I am currently a part-time business owner; however, I am looking to become full-time within one year. Why did you start your business? I co-founded KW Essential Services out of a desire to see more individuals, couples, and families reach their true potential. Going through my own personal and familial struggles allowed me to see the areas where others may also need assistance. As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I have seen too many broken homes and people struggling through life’s challenges. My passion is working with couples so my goal is to help them maintain a healthy, long-lasting relationship by giving them the necessary tools for each stage in their relationship.

Kiaundra Jackson - KW Essential Services

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business? The most rewarding aspect of having my own business is seeing lives changed, relationships restored, and families reconnected right in front of my very eyes. The joy that comes with knowing the business I started, has changed other’s lives in a positive way is priceless. Many may not understand this concept, but there is something special about being able to walk with someone through the toughest times of their lives. Leaving that kind of lasting imprint is one of the best feelings in the world. In addition, the freedom to create my own schedule, not have to answer to a boss, or have someone determine by worth based on my yearly salary are also aspects that have been quite rewarding. What are your biggest challenges? Truthfully, my biggest challenge has been the person in the mirror. Starting my own business has been the best time of my life, but also the most challenging. It has required me to push myself harder than I have ever pushed myself to accomplish any goal. My whole life has changed because I had to get outside of my comfort zone, which also meant changing my thinking and leaving behind the familiar. What is the best business advice you’ve ever received? The best advice I have ever received was from a woman who told me to always be a woman of integrity. That is something I will never forget because I have embodied it into my daily life. It is important to always keep your word, be honest, and as consistent as possible. When others see those values, they are drawn to your character and cannot help but want to be associated with you on a personal or professional level.

Kiaundra Jackson - KW Essential Services

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show? Wendy Talley is also the co-founder of KW Essential Services. Not only is she a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, but she is also my rock. I would not be here today if it were not for her seeing something unique in me from the first time we met. We are such kindred spirits that people think we are sisters everywhere we go. There is no other person I would rather be on this journey with. Her education, expertise, and theoretical approach are complementary to mine which makes our business partnership a match made in heaven. Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years? I have huge goals for KW Essential Services. Within the next 5 years, we will be a thriving private practice serving the greater Los Angeles area and abroad. We aspire to be well-known in the field of mental health by providing workshops, seminars, conferences, and trainings. We want to expand beyond serving those in need to also helping leverage other mental health professionals to accomplish their professional goals.

Kiaundra Jackson - KW Essential Services

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making? The advice I would give to other Moguls in the Making is to continue to strive towards your goals, even in the face of adversity. Never allow giving up to be an option for you. The road to success may get hard, frustrating, and lonely, but the results will be worth it. I would encourage every person to pursue his or her passions in life. God designed us all to be different and unique for the purpose of using our gifts, talents, resources, ideas, and services to be a blessing to others. Therefore, someone in the world is in need of the very thing you have to offer. If you would like to learn more about Kiaundra and KW Essential Services, connect with her online:

MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Cortney Ren’ae

Cortney Renae

It's backkkk...finally!!!! *Drumroll Please* I have a new Mogul in the Making entrepreneur spotlight today, featuring Cortney Ren'ae, founder of Flourishe, a promotional media company that offers solutions to businesses, corporations and entrepreneurs to spotlight their brand, grow visibility and connect to their audience. This is why she is affectionately known as "the expert connector".  When she is not behind the lens shooting weddings, special events, promotional events, etc., you can find Cortney teaching video marketing workshops, hosting her own networking/collaborative events, or hanging out with her too-adorable-for-words daughter.  Check out Cortney's interview below...

Cortney Renae Flourishe Media Group

Name: Cortney Ren’ae Location: Los Angeles Business Name: Flourishe Years in Business: 5 years

Are you a full or part time business owner? I am full time. Why did you start your business? I started Flourishe originally with the intention to connect with other moms because I was a new stay-at-home mother and found myself wanting to learn how I could grow to be a great mom and my best self. I wanted to create a vehicle that would simply empower others. Today, the focus is definitely more of a niche, now having Flourishe Media Group as a department under the umbrella, but the overall focus to empower others to grow is still there, which is the beautiful part of this entire vision & creation. Cortney Renae1 What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business? The most rewarding aspect of owning my own business is definitely being able to create my own schedule. Where I choose to work for the day, whether its from my bed in my pj’s, or in a quaint coffee shop I run across. I go with the flow when I don’t have a shoot scheduled, and of course work around my daughter’s schedule all at the same time. What are your biggest challenges? My biggest challenges, I would say, have been to charge my worth. I was programmed with this mentality of believing that I had to be great at what I do but to also be the most affordable so people would buy. I’ve done some work around breaking down this way of thinking and performing because over time, what I’ve learned is that not charging my worth, only created more problems that cost me time, and even more money. Cortney Renae Flourishe Media Group What is the best business advice you’ve ever received? The best advice I’ve received was from a spiritual reader who was sent to me at what I feel couldn’t have been a better time in my life. She told me to “Never let anyone, EVER dim my light! That I have a light in me that shines SO bright…..and to remember to let that shine!” Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show? I have a team of professionals I work with. Outside of the coaches I have to guide me in both my business & personal life, I have shooters that I’ll pull from our preferred vendor list, which includes some amazingly talented videographers and photographers. I’ve also began working with an incredible business who will be running our social media accounts and handling the communications with our clients on the back end, and I’m super excited about that! Once I can officially hire them FULL time, it’s going to be amazing! Cortney Renae Flourishe Media Group Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years? I see Flourishe being finely positioned in the market to be a go-to place to find information on empowering/inspiring events, training workshops, a place to find the latest industry leaders and the projects that need our community support. Flourishe Media Group will be a solutions provider to corporations & businesses, helping them to market & grow their business in this virtual world using multimedia. What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making? The advice I’d give to others is to NEVER EVER QUIT on yourself and your dreams. To step out and be BOLD, having the FAITH that your vision is happening for a reason and it’s your responsibility to make it happen. When God gives you an assignment….it won’t go away. It will constantly show up in your thoughts, your dreams and your conversations as you talk about what your naturally talented in and what you can create. Step up, step out and be ready to make the changes necessary so that you can flourishe and continuously move into your next level of excellence. Fulltime Why did you start your business? I had been working as a School Counselor for several years and I saw a need for a self-esteem service for girls, so I decided that enough was enough and I wanted to start one. I struggled with self-esteem my teen years, and made poor choices because of it. Then, when I was a School Counselor I saw many girls struggling just like I did. So, I made it my life’s mission to not only provide a service that gives girls an outlet to talk to someone who they can trust, but I am also their support system, accountability partner, and I give them tools and strategies to help them achieve their goals. My ultimate goal is to both empower girls and educate parents on the latest hot topic and trends affecting middle and high school girls.

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making? I would say STAY FOCUSED ON YOURSELF. Take plenty of time to THINK. I would also say, be healthy. Business is extremely difficult, and if you’re not in good shape, you won’t have stamina and energy to keep going for a long time. Your body helps you live your dreams, so take care of it by eating healthy foods and staying fit.  Lastly, think through your ideas, think through your strategies, then take immediate ACTION to implement your ideas. Always pray for vision and discernment because it is vision that drives the action. To learn more about Dr. Ambe, connect with her online:

Monique Moliere Piper - On Purpose Coaching

Name: Monique Moliere Piper Location: Nationwide Business Name: On Purpose Coaching Years in Business: 6+

Are you a full or part time business owner?

Full time business owner Why did you start your business? I wanted to give women the support they need to live their potential, through coaching. Too many are sitting paralyzed in information overwhelm. Unsure and fearful of what steps to take next. My clients decide their next “On Purpose” actions, and break through mental barriers that has them stuck. In one sentence, I help women get crystal clear, strategic, and execute in their lives and businesses. Monique Moliere Piper - On Purpose Coaching What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business? Honestly, the ability to get paid to do what matters most to me. I want women to know there is no ceiling on what’s possible, regardless of where you are, were, or where you are starting. Human potential has no ceiling. Our limited thinking does. Coaching and speaking allows me a unique opportunity. I teach others how to widen their window of what’s possible for them to achieve, and also “how” to achieve it. What are your biggest challenges? Juggling both family and career aspirations. I am a wife and mother first. However, “I know like I know” that my purpose on earth is to be of service to others. Another big challenge is consistency. This is an area I teach in workshops, in part, because being consistent is not a one time event. Life is always happening, learning to work on our desires through it all is an ongoing project. The plain truth, priorities do shift, home will need more of your attention during certain periods. The time one has to invest may change from time to time, but, investing time has to be a consistent commitment. Monique Moliere Piper - On Purpose Coaching What is the best business advice you’ve ever received? The best business advice I ever received is, make a decision! A decision puts you in a power position, because you are in action. A wrong decision can be fixed. A right decision puts you ahead of the game. The worst thing you can do, is sit on the sidelines. Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show? A small, incredibly devoted team. Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years? I see my business, influencing over a hundred thousand women to live their potential unapologetically. Monique Moliere Piper - On Purpose Coaching What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making? Gather enough information to take the next step. Collecting information alone, does not create a business. You must be willing to get your hands dirty. You are going to fail, that’s part of the process. So, fail fast. Use this formula: Action + Reflecting - Dwelling = Lessons. My second piece of advice, get a coach. If you are really serious about going to the next level. The most successful people have coaches for a reason! For more information on Monique Moliere Piper, connect with her online:
