MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Crys Watson

Crys Watson

Crys “the FABULOUS” Watson is a wardrobe stylist, personal shopper, and founder of the women of color empowerment organization, Noir Unicorn.  The organization gives African-Americans and people of color a platform to discuss societal issues such as colorism, racism, dating, and mental issues.  Her focus is to  promote positivity, unity, self-love, sisterhood, and accountability. As a lover of all things luxury and fabulous, you can also find Crys blogging about her journey as she navigates her way through the fashion industry.

Check out her interview…

Crys Watson

Name: Crys Watson
Location: Los Angeles
Business Name: Noir Unicorn and CTFW Wardrobe Services
Years in Business: Noir Unicorn (2years) & CTFW (4years)

Are you a full or part time business owner?

Part-time

Why did you start your business?

I have always been passionate about fashion and helping women, so I created CTFW Wardrobe Services. Wardrobe styling and fashion blogging is my platform to teach women how to look their best everyday without comparing themselves to others. 2 years later, I created a women of color non-profit organization called Noir Unicorn. My Noir Unicorn team and I produce group discussion social mixers that give African-Americans a platform to discuss issues such as colorism, dating, stereotypes and how we are portrayed in the media. I felt that this was something that we didn’t have in LA and there was a disturbing emotional separation between Black Women. I wanted to create a safe place where women (and men occasionally) of color could vent, share our stories, and encourage each other. We have also just added a monthly After-Work Sisterhood pop up mixer and a Noir Unicorn on a Mission Team that provides feminine care packages to homeless women.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

The most rewarding aspect of having my own business is knowing that I made a difference in my clients’ and attendees’ lives. I believe that we were put on this earth to be servants, and to know that I am walking in my calling each day is the biggest reward for me.

What are your biggest challenges?

My biggest challenge is dealing with anxiety. I learned that it is very normal to have anxiety when you have your own business and for a long time, I thought that it was only me that dealt with it. I am my biggest critic, and at times, I stand in my own way. Praying, listening to encouraging music, and watching encouraging videos has helped me tremendously.

Crys The Fabulous Watson

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

I will never forget when my wonderful friend and sister in Christ, Haneef R. Jordan told me “What God has for you is for you, and what he has for me is for me. Never compare yourself or be afraid to help others in this business. God has a place for all of us.” I think of that advice whenever I start to compare where I’m at to others.

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

I have 2 awesome girls that are on my Noir Unicorn Team (Aja Williams and Taylor Thibodaux). I work alone with CTFW Wardrobe Services, but occasionally I will enlist an assistant depending on the project.

Crys Watson Noir Unicorn

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

Our goal within the next 5 years for Noir Unicorn is to add more programs and to turn it into a community center where there will be weekly group discussions and life skills classes for all age groups. For CTFW, I will venture into style workshops to teach the everyday woman how to effortlessly look her best daily.

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

Make sure that you are passionate about what you do. If you wouldn’t do it for free, then it is not your calling. People will try to talk you out of what you’re doing or tell you that you’re crazy for being an entrepreneur, but when you’re passionate about what you do, all of the negative talk will roll off of your back.

3 Reasons Your Business Is NOT Making Money…and How to Fix It!

3 Reasons Your Biz is NOT Making Money

Let’s face it: we’re all in business to make money. Even if you’re doing something that you absolutely LOVE and would do in a heartbeat if you weren’t getting paid, the reality is you have bills to pay, so you need your business to generate income.

As a business/marketing consultant, I speak with several entrepreneurs on a daily basis, and often get the question “why am I not making any money?” You’re active on social media, blogging on a weekly basis, attending all of your local networking events…you know, all of the things that you should be doing. But, you still can’t seem to land enough clients to bring in a consistent cash flow. What gives?

There are many different factors that can contribute to this, but I am going to break down the three most common reasons your business may not be bringing in
money:

You’re a Jack/Jill of All Trades

You are a photographer, but you also have your own jewelry line, sell homemade candles, makeup, and weight loss shakes. Your goal is to bring in multiple revenue streams. The problem? Your potential customers are confused! They don’t really know exactly what it is that you do because you are offering many different products and services, none of which go hand in hand with one another.

The Fix: Niche down. Decide on the ONE thing that you want to be known as the go-to person for, and do away with the rest. You can still create multiple streams of income by finding several different ways to profit from your primary offering (Example: if you are a photographer, consider adding a photo booth, teaching photography workshops, etc).

You Don’t Have a Real Plan
Simply put: you’re winging it! You’re doing any and everything that you think you should do to find clients, but you really don’t have a solid strategy in place. Have you ever heard the saying “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail?” Well, it holds truth when it comes to marketing your business as well. If you want to attract more clients and start making money, you’ll have to create a strategic roadmap outlining how you will do so.

The Fix: Create a list of specific marketing activities that you will consistently
engage in to increase brand awareness and attract new clients. Then implement, implement, implement! Be sure to include a timeframe to monitor each activity and measure its effectiveness before moving on to something else.

You Aren’t Selling Anything
When I first started my business, I knew that I wanted to teach other entrepreneurs how to create a marketing strategy for their business. I put up a website, I offered tips on social media, but I really didn’t have anything to sell, and, you guessed it, I wasn’t making a dime. Now, it may seem like a no-brainer that in order to make money, you have to have a product or service to sell, but I’ve come to realize that I wasn’t the only one not actually selling anything, while expecting clients to come my way.

The Fix: Get clear on your services and offerings. You should be able to clearly and confidently tell potential clients what you do and how it will benefit them if they choose to work with you.

4 Tips to Stop Chasing Clients, and Start ATTRACTING Them

Stop Chasing Start Attracting

As a marketing strategist and business coach, the number one question that I hear from business owners is: “how do I get more clients?”  My response: you must create an effective marketing strategy that will allow you to stop CHASING clients, and start ATTRACTING them.

There are a lot of components to this, but to quickly break it down, these four steps will allow you to do just that:

Know Your Target Audience

A common mistake that entrepreneurs make is thinking that EVERYONE is their client. While it may be true that anyone can use your product or service, when it comes to marketing your business, you have to get really specific about the type of clients you want to work with. What do they look like? How much money do they make? Where do they live? How do they speak, act, and dress? Take some time to create your ideal client profile. Knowing this information will  help you weed out those who would not be the right fit for your business, and attract those that you can better serve.

Create a Clear Marketing Message

When putting together your marketing message, act as if you are talking to one specific person: your ideal client. Focus on their pain points and the specific results that they will receive as a direct result of working with you (ex: saving money, less stress, etc.)

Be Strategic About Pricing

Pricing plays a big part in whether or not someone decides to use your services, but maybe not in the way that you may think.  Oftentimes, creative entrepreneurs will under price their products/services because they think that is the way to entice clients. But that strategy actually works to the contrary. Strategic pricing is all about perceived value. Make sure that your clients understand the value of what you do. It should be reflected in the description of what they will receive in working with you, as well as the quality of your marketing materials. Know your worth, and highlight why you are worth every penny!

Be Consistent

A key part of marketing is knowing where your ideal clients are hanging out, then determining how to get your marketing message in front of them. However you decide to do that, whether it’s blogging, social media, email marketing, etc., the key is to be consistent with your efforts.   It generally takes a client 5-7 points of contact before they are ready to make a purchasing decision, and they will only buy from those that they know, like, and trust. Being consistent with your efforts will keep you at the top of their mind when it is time to sign on the dotted line.

Are you a full or part time business owner?

full time

Why did you start your business?

I wanted to practice law, but on my own terms. I have 3 children so I wanted flexibility. I also wanted to choose cases that I work on rather than just having them assigned to me. I wanted to always remain in control of what I’m doing, who I’m serving, and how I’m doing it…the only way to achieve this, for me, was entrepreneurship.

Merissa Grayson Attorney at Law

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

Being able to ensure that I’m only doing what I love. Working solely based on the vision that God gave to me, without any limits, and being able to enjoy my life and family at the same time without asking permission.

What are your biggest challenges?

Learning to delegate tasks that can be delegated. I’m extremely hands on, but oftentimes don’t have the time to be.

Merissa Grayson Attorney at Law

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

Done beats perfection. Start where you are and build from there.

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

I have a small team.

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

I plan to expand my law practice to another state (or few).

Merissa Grayson Attorney at Law

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

Focus on the “why”…why are you doing what you’re doing. Is it something you love? If not, shift the focus to something else. Don’t choose your work solely based on the amount of money you can make. Regardless of what you do, if you do the work, the money will come. Choose something you love and you’ll never feel like it’s “work”. Imagine living the rest of your life and not having to work.

Is Your Business Summer Ready? (5 Things You Can Automate Today)

Staycation

A couple of days ago, I returned from a mini staycation to San Diego with my little ones (the pic above shows how much fun we were having visiting SeaWorld and other local attractions!)

The cool thing is, even though I seemingly stepped away from my business for a few days, during the week no less, I was STILL able to bring in revenue and book new clients while I was away!

Now, if you’re anything like me, the summer months can sometimes get a little crazy chaotic: the kids are home every day (and of course they’re bored every moment of the day!), I’m playing taxi mom for all of the sports and extracurricular activities,  there are vacations to plan, social gatherings to attend…needless to say, there is a never-ending demand on my time more than usual.

When I first started my business, the Summer was killer on my business. My productivity was at an all-time low, which meant my income suffered as well.  I had to come up with a solution because, well, bills still have to be paid in the summertime, right?!

The solution: to automate as much of my business as possible!  This meant that I could still enjoy all of the fun that came along with the summertime, without having to be tied to my computer all day, every day, or worrying about missing out on income. After all, one of the main reasons I decided to become an entrepreneur was for more flexibility with my schedule.
.
If you spend even a small amount of time on social media, I’m sure you’ve seen a lot of posts about people getting their bodies “summer ready,”  but I want to know, is your BUSINESS summer ready?

If not, the number one piece of advice that I would offer you is to automate, automate, automate!

I am a big fan of the “set it and forget it” method! Automating certain aspects of your business, as well as creating systems, frees up so much of your time, allows you to work on more income producing tasks, spend more time with your family, and do the things you enjoy.

It is also especially helpful if you are still working a 9-5 and have a limited amount of time to work on your biz (I know all about that struggle!)

A few things that you can automate include:

Email Marketing – Most email marketing tools allow you to create automated emails to go out based on different triggers, such as when someone signs up to your email list, or simply a specified date and time that you set. Choose a day of the week to write your emails in batches and set them to go out weekly. Boom! Set it and forget it!

Blogging – If you follow my blog, you know that I have a weekly Mogul in the Making entrepreneur spotlight that is published on Mondays. I set aside Thursday as my “blogging days” to write up the post and use the scheduling feature to post it the following Monday. Boom! Set it and forget it!

Online Client Scheduling – Do you offer client consultations or one-on-one appointments with your clients?  It can sometimes become a hassle (and very time consuming) to go back and forth via email, trying to find a date and time that works for both you and your client. To save time, use an online scheduling tool (I use Calendly) to send to my clients. No more playing phone tag. I send the link to my calendar that lists my availability and let the client choose a match that works for them. Easy peasy!

Payment Processing – I believe in making the payment process as easy as possible. Who has time to personally send individual invoices? Not I! So, when a client is ready to work with me, I direct them to my Paypal link to choose the level in which they’d like to work with me (one time VIP intensive coaching session or 5 week mentoring session). The description of the services are already included and an invoice is automatically generated. They can also pay right on my website! Done and DONE!

Evergreen Courses – Creating evergreen courses (a course that requires a one time setup, usually delivered via email) are the perfect way to generate income “while you sleep” (or in this case, while you’re enjoying your summer!) With the proper systems in place, your clients can purchase and access the course information without you ever having to lift a finger after the initial setup.

I’m sure you started your business to have more time freedom, and to live the lifestyle that you desire, and deserve. Having the proper systems in place will allow you to do just that!

Take some time over the next few days to get your business systems in order. Trust me, your business, and your bank account, will thank you later!

Here’s to having a wonderful AND profitable Summer 2016!

Business Name: Its Robin Ayers
Years in Business: 4-5

Are you a full or part time business owner?

Full time

Why did you start your business?

I began interviewing people who have a story to tell. There aren’t a lot of “feel good” stories that we hear about anymore. Many celebrities are well known in the blogs for gossip/slanderous stories, but I wanted to share stories of motivation and inspiration that people needed to hear.

Robin Ayers

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

Sharing inspirational stories has also allowed me to be a vessel of hope and inspiration for others. People who get full when I speak my words of wisdom reward me. In addition to that, knowing that my two daughters are looking at me as a role model for starting my own business and running it with class and dignity. Nothing beats that feeling!

What are your biggest challenges?

I’ve been a one-woman-show, with the help of some great people along the way. The biggest challenge is learning how to delegate to people who have the same drive, vision, and passion for “goodness” that I do. So often, people are, unfortunately, driven by the amount of money or benefit that they’ll receive if they collaborate with you or work with you on a project. Finances don’t drive me, passion does. So finding people who think the same way has been a challenge thus far.

Robin Ayers

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

“Follow your dreams, the money will come.” I don’t remember who told me that but I’ve actually heard that many times and I believe it to be true.

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

It’s funny that I answered this as one of my biggest challenges. I won’t be a one-woman show for too much longer though. I can feel it!

Robin Ayers

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?
I’m confident that I will be hosting a show in the next 5 years, whether on a network or web based program. My vision is to be the “go to” for positive news for, not only celebrities, but everyday achievers as well.

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

Put your own self on the map. Grind so hard that people will begin to take note of you and pay you attention. The things you work hard for, no one can take away from you.
