MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Ajarae Coleman

What do you do when you’re searching for a service that you could really benefit from, but simply can’t find anything like it? Well, if you’re anything like today’s featured Mogul in the Making, Ajarae Coleman, you simply start a business offering the service yourself!

As an actress, she couldn’t find a place where she could network and build the quality relationships needed to build a successful career, so Coleman started The Workshop Guru, an online community that allows actors to save time and money by giving them the inside scoop on casting director workshops.

Check out her story, as she shares a few golden nuggets about what it’s like to start a business with little capital, the importance of finding a mentor, and the best way to build a loyal client base.  You’ll want to take notes on the wisdom she dropped!

Ajarae Coleman The Workshop Guru

Name: Ajarae Coleman

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Business Name: The Workshop Guru

Years in Business: 2

Are you a full or part time business owner?

I am an actress, so the amount of time I can dedicate to my business varies with my project and audition schedule. For the most part, I run my business part-time to fund and support my creative endeavors.

Ajarae Coleman The Workshop Guru

Why did you start your business?

I started my business because I needed a service like The Workshop Guru myself to help me with the networking and relationship-building side of my acting career, and it simply didn’t exist. Allow me to explain. There is a positive trend in the actor and artist community right now… actors recognize that it’s not enough to be an amazing actor and be good at your craft. In order to be successful in this competitive landscape, we have to treat our acting careers like businesses. We have to develop trust with industry decision-makers, and let people know that we exist. One of the tools many actors use is “casting director (CD) workshops.” These workshops are classes taught by professionals who hire actors for film, television and theater projects. Actors who purchase these workshops perform short scenes for the CD, and in return the CD gives them feedback, explains how the casting process works, and offers real-world advice. Casting director workshops are controversial, because some people see them as paid auditions, but actors can use them strategically as a tool to build relationships. I have personally found casting director workshops useful in building meaningful relationships with people who have later hired me for jobs. Actors who are most successful with workshops are strategic in their approach. They target specific projects based on their strengths and qualities as an actor, they figure out which CDs casts those projects, and then they develop relationships with those CDs via workshops and other methods. Before TheWorkshopGuru.com existed, however, it wasn’t easy to use workshops strategically. There are over 40 different workshops studios in Los Angeles, and over 20 in New York City. These studios offer classes with different CDs for vastly different prices, in different formats, and in a wide range of facilities. Workshop Guru helps actors find the workshops they will be most successful in, for the best prices, on a time and date that is convenient for the actor. A WG membership allows actors to target specific casting directors, and to share reviews of casting directors (as teachers of the workshops) and workshop studios (as service providers). I describe The Workshop Guru as “Yelp meets Kayak for casting director workshops” (and now also agent/manager workshops) in LA and NYC. No other service like ours exists, and I’m proud to be filling this void for actors who want to save time and money and use workshops to market themselves more effectively.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

I love that I am in control of my schedule. When I worked at a corporate job, I would get so grumpy on Sunday evenings, because I dreaded getting up and spending the entire next day at work. And I actually liked my corporate job, so I can’t even imagine how people feel when they are in traditional jobs that they hate! It is also extremely rewarding to step back and look at a business that you created from scratch…from just an idea. There is a huge sense of accomplishment that comes from that. But the best part of my day is when I get an email or social media message from a fellow actor telling me how much they love the site, and how much it helps them. That makes all the work totally worth it. Ajarae Coleman The Workshop Guru

What are your biggest challenges?

I started my online business having very little start-up capital or knowledge about how websites work and are developed. It’s been a very interesting journey, to say the least! There was no out-of-the-box software solution for our application, so I’ve had to figure out how to develop the website in an affordable way. The site is still a work-in-progress, but I’m happy now with its usability for our members. Another major challenge was that I started the business on my own. I’ve helped run a much larger company, but I’ve never done anything like this before. I’ve enjoyed making all the critical business decisions, and developing systems on my own, but having no partner has been a huge challenge. I’ve had to figure out when to ask for help, when it’s best to pay to delegate, when to take others’ advice, and when to go with my gut. Now I would say that my biggest challenge is that when I don’t know exactly how to do something, I tend to procrastinate. I’m sure a lot of Moguls in the Making can identify with this. I have to stay aware of that tendency, and consciously overcome that resistance every single day. It’s crucial that I buckle down and get started on projects, even when I don’t know the path to completion. My job is to identify the next step and do it. Otherwise, new initiatives drag on and on.

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

The best business advice I’ve ever received is that “education-based marketing” is the key to success. Rather than trying to sell potential customers something, it’s so much better to come from a place of service, and teach them something they really need to know. Then position the purchase of your product or service to help them take what you taught them to the next level. If you can add value and build trust with your prospective customers before they spend a dime, they will happily invest in what you have to offer, and will be loyal customers and ambassadors for your business.

Ajarae Coleman The Workshop Guru

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

I have a small team that consists of a web developer, a social media assistant, and a team of research assistants who keep all the data on the website accurate every day. Customer service is a passion of mine, and I love interacting with fellow actors, so I handle all customer service myself for now. I am currently looking for a great team member to start to delegate that responsibility to, so that nothing falls by the wayside when I am busy with acting projects and auditions, or when I travel.

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

Over the next five years, we will steadily continue to grow our base of actor members, and cultivate the best online resource for information about casting director practices and preferences. The Workshop Guru will be a thriving online community of proactive actors who share information and support each other. We’ll also have a more extensive free knowledge base for developing actors in our blog.

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

I would advise other Moguls in the Making to find a coach or mentor who’s been an entrepreneur for 7 or more years to support them through the process of starting a business. I personally think it’s a great idea to invest financially in a coaching program, because that made all the difference to me. I would also tell them to take time to read at least one book per month by a successful business owner. When you are in year 1 or 2 after starting your business, and struggling to get your bearings, it can be difficult to keep perspective on why you decided to become an entrepreneur. The guidance these experienced business owners can offer is invaluable. A book I re-read often that is applicable to artists and entrepreneurs alike is Steven Pressfield’s The War of Art. It’s all about overcoming resistance when we’re pursuing something worthwhile. Good luck!

MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Rebekka Lien

Today’s Mogul in the Making Entrepreneur Spotlight features Rebekka Lien, a multi-talented creative entrepreneur and businesswoman.  Rebekka is the epitome of what I like to call a “hustle-preneur”, combining her many skills, talents, and passions to create a lifestyle of freedom and self-fulfillment.  Not only is she a real estate professional, but she also teaches yoga, hosts creative workshops and speaks at seminars, events, etc., to teach other entrepreneurs to survive and thrive by working for themselves.

Check out her story to find out how she was able to quit her job and create several businesses that allow her to live life on her own terms while inspiring others along the way!

Entrepreneur Rebekka Lien

Name: Rebekka Lien

Location: Los Angeles

Business Name: Rebekka Lien – Creative Entrepreneur, Speaker &

Spokesperson, Real Estate Professional at Real Estate Heaven

Years in Business: 10

Are you a full or part time business owner?

Full time business owner

Why did you start your business?

I was selling toys at the age of 8 and have always been an entrepreneur. It was natural for me to want to start my own business. I started selling clothes and jewelry on Ebay and expanded to selling at shows while working full time. I decided to quit my job in 2011. Soon enough, I expanded my mind and thought “how can I make more money in less time?” I started coaching people one on one, then in groups, then I spoke at bigger events. My passion projects are numerous! I teach Yoga and Meditation weekly, write a monthly column for West Valley Journal and am taking acting classes! Real estate was a natural progression because I saw the opportunity to help people achieve their dreams and create wealth while doing it. My goal is to build multiple businesses and help others be the highest expression of who they are. The beautiful thing about being human is that we are multi-dimensional, so we don’t have to just focus on “one thing.” DO WHAT MAKES YOU COME ALIVE!

Entrepreneur Rebekka Lien

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

Having your own business is not always easy, but the biggest reward is knowing that YOU built it! I look back at how I survived not having a full time job and I am truly amazed at how far I have come. Most people think about their fears of not being able to survive- that is low energy and short term thinking.  I think BIG and LONG TERM. Where do I see myself in 5-10 years? Every year, my projects, talents, business expands because I have sown hours of tactful work and creativity into it! Freedom is what I seek and I remind myself to be free everyday!

What are your biggest challenges?

My biggest challenges is working with people. Don’t get me wrong, I love people, but NOT everyone is easy to work with. You can love people, but you don’t always like them. I personally clash with personalities that try to control me. Since I am such an independent-minded thinker, I have to humble my ego and ask myself “is it worth it?” I’m grateful that I know how to set boundaries with personality types that try to guilt trip or control me. In business.  People will manipulate you to get what they want, but you have to stand your ground and not let them undermine your values, morals, and goals!

Entrepreneur Rebekka Lien

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

Don’t give up. Most people give up when they are almost there. What is the difference between people who are excellent and people who are just okay? The people who are good don’t push themselves to the very end because it is too hard, it is a mental game! People who are excellent at what they do battle the doubts and push forward even when all odds are against them!

Do you have a team or are you a one woman show?

My brand is MY NAME but I have people that I outsource work to. I have graphic designers, advisors, and assistants that I delegate work to. My goal is to outsource everything I don’t have to do. For example, I hope to speak at events, write books, close deals and delegate all administrative work to my assistants.

Entrepreneur Rebekka Lien

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

In 5 years I will be 31! I hope to be traveling around the world speaking at conferences, have books published and own multiple self-running businesses! My name will be INTERNATIONALLY known. I will be a sought after creative businesswoman and speaker. I also hope to have a partner who can do some grunt work for me (JK, not).

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

DON’T WAIT FOR LIFE TO BE PERFECT TO START! I have seen too many people wait until they are too old, too tired, too settled, too scared to make a change in their life or start a business in their life! LIFE will NEVER be perfect, something will always be amiss. You have to JUMP off the cliff as soon as possible or the fear-mongers will grab you by the shoulders and force you to compromise and live a boring life with the rest of the world! You don’t know how HIGH you can fly if you stay grounded in stability. Don’t be that bird who is too scared to fly their whole life. Soar high because THAT is your destiny!

On Saturday August 2, 2014, Rebekka is hosting a live workshop for aspiring entrepreneurs called  “How to Make Money Doing What You Love”.  Join her to learn to become the highest expression of who you are meant to be and gain practical strategies and tips to start making money while using all the talents and skills you have! REGISTER TODAY at http://lovemoneywork.eventbrite.com

My Weight Loss Journey + Cilantro Lime Tilapia Tacos Recipe

In April of last year, I set out on a healthier lifestyle journey.  My weight was out of control, I felt sluggish all the time, and was overall unhappy about my appearance.  I started working out, and I wouldn’t say I started “dieting”, but I definitely changed my eating habits.  I was so proud of myself!  For the first time ever, I began to enjoy my exercise routine and actually stuck with it. I started preparing to run my first 5k and was well on my way to reaching my first weight loss goal.

Nikola at the Culver City Stairs

By September, I was down 3olbs…only 10 pound shy of my goal.  Unfortunately, I was in a really bad car accident that left me with a broken talus (the major bone in your ankle).  I had to wear this crazy looking metal contraption for 3 long months, graduated to a big, bulky boot, and needed to walk with a walker.  I was left with a broken spirit and, needless to say, my weight loss  goals came to a screeching halt because I could no longer walk nor prepare my own healthy meals.  Not to mention, the doctors had little hope that I would ever be able to run again.

Nikola wearing Metal Asphyx

Fast forward to May 2014.  I had slowly made progress and was able to move around a lot better. I was determined to get  back in shape!  I still had a lot of physical limitations that didn’t allow me to work out the way that I used to, so I decided that at the very least I could get back into the groove of preparing healthier meals  again.

I set out to find some really GOOD, healthy recipes, because I believe that healthy doesn’t have to be boring and there would be no eating like a bird over here! Of course I started my search on my number one go-to resource site: Pinterest!  I found a ton of fun and delicious looking recipes that I wanted to try.  My very first were these Cilantro Lime Tilapia Tacos. OMG, were these a hit!  They were bursting with flavor…yum!

Here is the recipe.

I’ve been posting pictures of my “healthy doesn’t have to be boring” recipes on Facebook, and so many people have reached out to me to share them, so I’ve decided to make this a weekly feature on the blog.  Why? Because I feel that your health and wellness is an integral part of being a mogul  in the making.  I hope that my weight loss journey, even with all of the obstacles and curveballs thrown my way, will inspire others to make their health a priority and embark on a journey of their own.

{Video} Are You Watering Your Business?

Some people think that the road to a successful business is a straight path, when it usually is filled with many twists, turns, bumps, and bruises along the way.

So, the other day, while I was outside watering my grass, I was hit with a thought: in a lot of ways, marketing a business can be compared to doing what it takes to make your grass grow.  Now, I know that may sound a little odd, but think about it.

When it comes to marketing your business, you have to plant the seeds and water it on a consistent basis if you want to see it grow.

(click the link above to Tweet)

Check out this short video to see what I mean…

One thing is for sure: if you consistently plant small seeds towards your business’ success, you will eventually reap the harvest you are seeking.

So I ask you, are you watering YOUR business? Leave a comment below.

{Event Recap} June Mogul Meetup

June Mogul Meetup

It is an AMAZING feeling to see your vision come to life!

That is exactly what happened when I hosted the first Mogul Meetup event a couple of weeks ago at the Microsoft Store in Century City!  All of the hard work, second-guessing (What if no one shows up? What if this is a complete failure?), and sleepless nights paid off, as the event was a success!

I had a vision to create a networking mixer that was really fun and interactive (not just your typical “networking event” where people hand out a million business cards without making any quality connections…boring!!!) while gaining the tips, resources, and tools to take their businesses/brands to the next level.   Mogul Meetups were born from this concept.

Kelsey Borlan Lee, co-founder of the duo The Brand Gals, a full service branding firm and photography studio, was the first guest speaker.  Kelsey walked attendees through the “6 Essentials of Building a Smashing Brand.”

MITM Entrepreneur Spotlight: Queenie Johnson

Happy Monday, future moguls! I hope you enjoyed your long weekend and were able to take some time away from working to relax and have fun with family and friends.

I’m happy to be back with another Mogul in the Making Entrepreneur Spotlight, featuring Queenie Johnson, M.A., founder of SheRises.org, a premier brand academy for enterpRISING women who are ready to up their game, step into their next level of success and achieve those seemingly impossible goals in life and business.

Queenie is such an inspirational woman of God!  Although I have yet to meet her in person, from our online encounters I can tell she has a genuine desire and passion for helping others succeed. Not only does she teach women how to uplevel their lives and businesses, she also runs a company called Distinguished Learning Group, an education company that offers academic tutoring, workshops, and a summer day camp for kids ages 7-12.

Check out her story…

Why did you start your business?

I started SheRISES.org because I wanted to create a place modern business owners could expand their Business, Brand & Brilliance
using biblical principles.

SheRises.org Logo

What has been the most rewarding aspect of having your own business?

I enjoy seeing clients get results, but more importantly I love seeing the impact that they have on others as a result of the work we’ve done together.

What are your biggest challenges?

When I first started it was learning how to blend all of my ideas, clarify my vision, but once I nailed that down I’ve been able to attract my clients and establish my brand perspective.

What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

Focus on doing one to two things at a time, not five to seven. Your business deserves top notch focus.  When you’re doing too much, attempting to release all of your visions at once, you’ll end up splitting your energy, resources and brand presence. Get clear and stay focused. I know that this is easier said than done, but it’s the best advice that I can give.

Do you have a team or are you a one man/woman show?

I run SheRISES alone, but I do outsource a lot of my work.

Where do you see your biz in the next 5 years?

I can’t wait to see where God takes SheRISES.org.

What advice would you give to other Moguls in the Making?

Focus on your profit plan, marketing plan and client creation plan. Everything else is a waste of time. Period.
